Title: Newb rebuild question Post by singlesgoinsteady on 03/19/12 at 19:42:25 I've never rebuilt a motor. What's the standard method for removing all the old oily gasket material and especially the brown gasket that's on pretty good? I don't want to gouge the head/cylinder with a razor blade. A seasoned vet is going to help me put her all back together. Cheers - SGS |
Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by verslagen1 on 03/19/12 at 20:11:50 a plastic scraper will do the job for tougher jobs you can use aircraft striper or a dremel with a nylon brush or a drill with a rotary brush |
Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by justin_o_guy2 on 03/20/12 at 12:32:57 or a drill with a rotary brush Too stiff of a brush & aluminum will go away, Id steer clear of a steel brush, & test somewhere other than a sealing surface before you start. |
Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by Boofer on 03/20/12 at 13:21:57 Get a body shop to order some plastic razor blades for you. It may cost $10 for a pack, but they'll last you forever. They are great for removing pinstripes. |

Or, if you have a young daughter, you can rip the blade outta her Barbies razor. |

Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by singlesgoinsteady on 03/20/12 at 20:05:45 Thanks for the tips. I do have a young daughter, but, she's not to the Barbie stage yet. I got lost on the Jingo stuff, but, I'll look for one of those green nylon wheels that looks like astro turf or a rubber eraser wheel and see how they work. I just need a hard HARD plastic scraper for the gasket. The build thus far is in the blog below. Cheers -D |
Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by LANCER on 03/21/12 at 03:02:44 check the auto parts stores, walmart, etc, for the plastic ice/windshield scrappers. they work pretty good for that sort of thing I do use a small knife blade to help separate the gasket from the metal surface (being very careful) in places so the plastic will have a starting place |

Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by Routy on 03/21/12 at 05:01:36 A quality metal gasket scraper works fine on aluminum. They are made w/ thin.....hi carbon steel..... they are not supposed to be sharpened,...... so they normally don't hurt aluminum surfaces. |
Title: Re: Newb rebuild question Post by Digger on 07/14/12 at 18:53:12 For future reference... Here's a thread about plastic scrapers and other ways to remove old gasket materials: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1247279495/0 You will find a dead link in said thread concerning a plastic scraper I use. Here are some active links for said scraper (model GTP530A): http://jusntyme.com/products/scrapers.html?p=JK8 http://www.skygeek.com/jus-n-tyme-gtp530a-glass-filled-nylon-scraper-double-angle-tips.html IHTH someone! |
