I was wondering if anyone can tell me how many RPMs a 4 speed Savage is doing in top gear at 60 miles an hour, versus how many RPMs a 5 speed Savage is doing in top gear at 60 miles and hour.

the top gear ratio of both are nearly the same with the 4speed being a hair higher.

So my guess would be the same w/in 50 rpm.

Almost makes that 5th gear seem kinda useless, huh?
Sometimes I wish I had a 5th gear, but not if there is little to no difference. It does seem to be running at pretty high rpm when going over 55.
I get Harleys passing me sometimes and they are just bump bump bumping along, sounding like mine in 4th, going 35. But they are going 75-80. Mine will be winding out, sounds like a dirt bike in 2nd going 55.
I call it the Suzuki gear ratio fail.
Not much you can do about it but ride and enjoy the vibration. :D

Between that and the really comfy seat, ;D are the reasons I've never been on an extended road trip.

Top gear (4-speed): 14/16 (0.875:1)
Top gear (5-speed): 23/26 (0.885:1)

The 4-speed will run slightly less RPMs in top gear. Both should be about the same though (give or take a few RPMs).

Given all this, I think that if it wasn't for the starter gear, I would rather have the 4 speed. It would mean a lot less shifting, and given the way that I ride, I really don't see a down side. Seems that they just put a 5th gear in for marketing.

Yes, the 5th gear was added because eveything else had it. Suzuki dealers were having a hard time selling the 4 speeds. People didn't understand the bike then, & most still don't.

The starter issue can be fixed, so the ideal Savage for me would be the 4 speed with the upgraded starter parts. 8-)

Just FYI - if anyone wants to know.

I'm not sure of the gear teeth count but the ratios are correct. I don't remember where I got these numbers from but let's assume it was from Gerald.Hughes, so...Thanks! :D

4-spd: 31/14?, 27/18?, 23/21?, 14/16?
2.214, 1.500, 1.095, 0.875

Primary and final reduction ratios are the same for 4 and 5 speeds.
