OK, folks, I have reinstalled my carb after a cleaning. As I mentioned in another thread, I had some trouble turning the engine over trying to use jumper cables. I just finally installed the battery and it started fine. Now the engine sounds like it's racing really hard. The throttle cable seems fine. So I assume I have to adjust the idle speed screw and the newly exposed idle mixture screw. Since it's racing, I assume it the idle speed screw. I admit I'm a little gun shy since the engine is racing so hard I'm afraid of damage. So, I assume turning the screw out slows it down and in speeds it up? I'd like to slow it down before I start it again.

Thanks to all BTW. I'm a rank beginner and this is all a bit intimidating when all I have is the Clymer's manual. :o

CW,.. will lean and slow idle mix...

...but, if it's racing that much,.. I'd guess you assembled something wrong...
Did you put the washer under the main jet?....

What does the washer look like? Is it flat or a little brass tube?

I turned the idle speed screw all the way out and it's still happening. I think I put that washer back since the plastic back I put the part sin is empty. I guess I'll have to take everything apart and start looking. Oh well. :-[

When you turn the idle speed screw out, does the throttle follow?

Dang. I just looked and the idle speed screw isn't in contact with the stop on throttle assembly. It looks like the assembly is on wrong. That would certainly make engine race. I guess I still have to take the carb out to figure how I put it on wrong. It may not be the only thing wrong, but it is wrong so thanks.

check your cable

might not be correctly seated at the carb.

Slow down, breathe,, dont take it apart again,,disconnect the cable from the carb & see if the idle drops. You can run the gas w/o the cable, prove where the problem is, cable or carb,Im bettin cable

I thought I'd post to finish the story.

Good advice, Justin-O. I did that and looked carefully at the throttle connection to the carb. The little sleeve at the end of the throttle line wasn't seated correctly and it was pulling on the throttle. I fixed that and the bike ran fine. Still tuning a bit, but it seems to be running fine. I had sanded down the white spacer by a half and it seems to run better.

So, thanks for all the advice. This was my first time disassembling the bike to any great extent and it's a bit unnerving when you're never quite sure you doing things right.

When we touch things, sometimes we mess up, assuming we know where we messed up can be another mistake, time to step away & think,, how can I know where the problem is?
Glad to see you found the problem w/o making a several hour ordeal out of it.
