I have notice that as the time for oil changes approaches I have a difficult time finding neutral. Is this a function of the oil viscosity or a characteristic of a wet clutch?

Let's start out with you telling us the brand and weight of the oil you are using.

Answers are different depending on where you start out at ....

Example: people changing from dino this and that oils to Rotella T6 often say the bike shifts better/cleaner/easier.

A better oil film, more ZDDP coating all the sliding friction points and a cleaner engine (heavy detergent and dispersant packages) all help explain this perception.

The old oil is well sheared, is gas contaminated and has its packages well depleted and it likely checks 5-10 weight points lighter accordingly.

Folks have also noted oil useage goes up when the oil gets tired, for these same reasons.

It isn't an oil war, these things are true of every kind of oil to some degree. Dino oils do this more than the synthetics do, yes, but that isn't news to anyone is it?

To get you an oil war you need somebody making brand related statements, generally with no backup thoughts or real information behind it.

This is simply about a question of why tired oil shifts relatively poorly compared to fresh oil (same brand and weight even).

Great info and great questions!

Since I started this I will tell you that I use the the regular ole suzuki oil from the corner suzuki dealer.

I change it about every 1500 - 2000 miles.

I leak oil around the dreaded plug and do not know if it is worth buying the "good stuff" - like I know wat that is - if I am leaking oil.

I am the 3rd owner of a 1999 thumper with 7700 miles.

Use Klotz oil to fix the oil leak issue...

Anywho check the tech section for the oil leak fix if its from the head. An Listen to what Ol Feller tells you... or Vers or people lots smarter than me....

My oil consumption is steady after a change, for a while, as the oil gets tired, I see it increase, I dont even worry about the odometer, oil consumption tells me when the oil is tired.

Your problem can be related to the clutch not release-ing completely. If you have any gear clatter when shifting into 1st gear, then that probably is the cause of the problem. Try adjusting the clutch cable,........less slack.
