Title: Blowing Black Soot !
Post by MMRanch on 03/09/12 at 18:30:23

What can posibley be wrong ?    My bike is running way rich.  The jets are 50/145 , cone filter , Harley muffler (not too noisey), float level on the low side if anything.
There is a slight hesation (like dead spot) in the throdle right above idle.    Gas millage is in the 40's.   I doin't know what to make of it ?

Any Ideas are more than welcome !

It was running a little rich befor I rebuilt it this winter , but nothing like this ....

do you still have the stock petcock?

check for a perforated diaphragm.

when's the last time you had the carb apart?

Oil is blue, fuel is white or black.
but, check your oil level, if it is oil, you'll be loosing a lot of oil.

Thanks Guys

No more vacum petcock , Raptor (yes)

I woke-up this morning thinking Cam timming ?

What if ?    Corect me if I'm wrong ????

Cam is too fast :   well ,
exaust opens befor power stroke is done, intake opens befor suction starts , ????

Cam is too Slow :
exaust still open when suction (intake)  starts,   intake not open till piston is going down.

there is also a knock under throdle above 2500+- rpm.

Cam-Chain is not stretched much , Versey I had the same idea you did about the second hole on the adjuster ,not sure who did it first but great idea.   Thats where its at (extended hole but first click on adjuster)

Justin Versey and Thumper

Thanks for the input

I took Baby to the tractor shed today.   Took the muffler off and made sure the header was sealed up good  and then sure the muffle was  on all-the-way.   Also took the carb bowl off and lowered the fuel level a little.    And put a little lock-washer under the primary jet to make sure the pipe it screws into was down all the way and lower the primary jet futher down into the bowl.

Well , (Drum Roll)   ....

I'm still breaking it in so I didn't get over 65 by the speedometer (That would be 72 by the mile markers on  the Interstate.    We (Baby and Me) did a little 114 mile loop today through 5 of the local towns.  She only used 1.8 gal. to do it , mostley staying in 4 or 5 gear , couple stops and a few red lights.

There seem to be a big 10% error in the Miles now.  (155/80-15 and 25 tooth front sprocket)

The flat spot in the throdle all but went away , but the knock in the head didn't , only does it when I demand power .?.  I running 93 fuel.

Anyway thats the report.    Power with the Tall gear is no problem.    I'm wondering if the float was the main problem all along ?

Justin

Seems like Versy and I had the same Idea about the exteded cam-adjuster ---- sorta----  I welded an extention on mine(Years ago) and also use a weaker spring (all that force isn't nessary-its got a ratchet to hold it once it expans) .    Versey's got it fair and squair on the pin to keep the plunger from comming all the way out , but I did the same thing to mine too.

This past winter I cut-out the cylinder ,  put a 95mm wesico piston in and did some welding and polishing on my cam (not taller but wider, same duration).   So I'm breaking in the new bore-job.    About 250 miles on it this spring.

I totally agree,,& Ithink the ratchet may be too agressive, too

Yea Justin befor the idea to put a pin in the plunger like versy did , I just had a spring that didn't push that FAR.   but it doin't hurt to have both.

I doin't know how to get finner teeth on the ratchet thingie so I'm leaving it alone.

I've got 42 + K/Miles  and still likeing it!

I think the ratchet catches too often, I would have fewer teeth, so when the jug "grows" it didnt have to pull on the chain so hard.
