basics:

Jack up the back end.
Take off the belt.
Undo the brake.
Pull out the axle.

Welcome to the forum. This bike is a great one to learn some wrenching skills on. You'll probably want to get yourself a Clymer, it's a godsend.

Under Rear Suspension and Brakes there are a couple good threads that should answer most of your questions.

You'll probably want to bookmark that thread as well since it's a gathering of a lot of knowledge.

don't need to take wheel off to get off fender.

take off rails
take off left shock and belt guard
you can take the right shock off too if you need more room.
just need to lift rear with jack.

I just took off my rear wheel to day to get a new tire on it,What a pain it was,The axle bolt hits the stock muffler you have to that off both shocks and do a lot a twisting around and a lot of parts off,I've had about 15 motorcycles and this is by far the hardest to do anything with.

Bill, it helps to install the axle from the left side of the bike, it makes that muffler problem go away from now on.

there is a great thread in the tech section on how to make a cheap lift.  I imagine money is not in abundance.  Making the lift makes life much easier. As to removing the wheel, you have had advice. Putting it back, take your time and make sure everything lines up. Its that simple.

8-)

i didn't have to pull the belt cover or shocks, and the wheel came off really easy no binding up or anything and i cleaned it all up and put it back together to keep things straight while i paint my fenders

Stock muffler was the first thing to go on Nessy so I can't say if it would have been in the way.

Did I hear that right,....you havin a dealer do what again ?

Replacing the tire was the easy part for me, but when I went to put all the spacers back in,.....after they rolled all over the place when I pulled the axle out, it all came to a halt ! I had 2 beers and it didn't help one bit. But Savage.com came to the rescue,......some nice guy here posted the illistration of the rear assy. And all that after I "knew" that you have to watch how it comes apart !

'05 Nothing to remove except the brake rod, belt and the axel. Don't know about the mffler. I have a Dyna. Can not understand why you took the shocks off. Belt cover makes sence if you have one all the way back to the rear drive pully.

I grew up drawing sketches and labeling parts as I disassembled.  Digital cameras make that so much easier nowadays.  I still label some parts though.

The dyna is smaller at the end and maybe shorter than stock muffler,The axle bolt just hit enough it wouldn,t come out,One inch shorter and there would have been no problem,I just looked at as picture of the new S40,I have longer shocks with stock shocks it would have come out.
