Title: Stupid newbie question again sorry guys
Post by rodeoclown on 03/07/12 at 04:56:49

I have the back firing thing going on, found that out since I finally got it on the road because of weather,it came with a jardine muffler. So my question is what carb kit to use and what size jets? From what I have read the exhaust effects the carb.Im trying not to buy a bunch of different sizes of  jets and where do I get he plastic washer?

Welcome to the forums.  I would first make sure that no previous mods to the carb were done. ie...do you have stock jets now, did the p.o. shim the needle? Is the brass mixture screw still in tact? Once you know these you will have a better idea of where to start?

Also, is it a stock air filter?

8-)

One small step at a time...too many changes at once and you won't know what did what.
The white spacer I bought from ACE hardware...a nylon #4 as I recall...have fun!

Exactly right... can't advise where to go until we know where you're at.

It is a stock air filter. It is a 1997 with 2457 miles on it.

No "carb kit"...
Follow Bubba to Ace...

I'd try a #150 main, and stock pilot if you are at sea level.. open the idle mix a bit, try 2.5 turns...

You may want get a k'n or foam filter to get the most out of the Jardine...
There's a foam conversion in the tech if you like to save money...
Then try 152.5/55 on the jets...

But,.. jetting is a guessing game without testing the bike... :-?...

Check bolts on header flange, & do it when its cold & dont take your Caveman with you,, 1/4' ratchet, feeel of it,, go Eeeeeasy,, you can tighten it again,
Check where muff meets header, too, a candle is your friend.

It looks like they took out the brass plug already.there is a brass screw with a flat head on it. Now i am wondering what else they have tried on it already.

Be sure that the engine is at operating temp before adjusting the carb.  A 5 minute ride is the quickest way to get it to that temp.
Letting it idle for a few minutes is not adequate; idling for 10  minutes would do it though.  You want it well beyond the point where it no longer needs the choke.

Thanks Lancer learned that already sounded good until it warmed up.I guess I dont know what the previous owner had done to it with out taking the carb off.How do I go  about getting one of your Jet kits Lancer? I need to go out and get the white washer today.

Some backfiring is normal, so you may not have any problem there.

Is it running bad now ?,....you never did say. If not, why are you just itching to hack the carb,.......probably for no reason ? Do a plug read, and go from there. You said the idling improved when you adjusted the air/fuel mixture,....thats good.
You better have a dial calipers when you start playing w/ the white spacer. It is a critical adjustment,....and also one that may not be needed.......unless you have a lean spot in the low to intermedieate throttle range.

For never hearing one stock and never owning one before it is hard to tell if it is running correctly to all the old hands here. I got it with a jardine on it and it backfires. How much is to much backfire? I dont know to me it is to much. How much back fire should I have then? It is hard to explain in words.

maybe I can help- I was where you are a week ago. I have a 1996 and put a jardine on it. mine was already stock at 3 turns out on the mixture screw and that turned out to be ok once I jetted it according to lancers information. Im progressing. I have right now the Jardine, K&n filter slip in, and a 152.5 main jet and a stock pilot and my bike has a whole new power range 100% inprovement on the low end and mi range and only backfires when I encourage it to by driving it like a sportster. lol I get the occasional downshift at high rpm pop and once in a while when im buried into the throttle and shift hard I get a cool to me snap backfire.

So as all the wise ones here told me and what worked on basically your exact bike for me was jardine,k&n, 152.5 main and stock pilot jet. start there as wise Lancer told me and he was right. hope this helps one noob to another in similiar spot. ;)

i have a 96 with stock air box & jardine - 3turns CCW on the air/fuel mix screw - 152.5 & 55 no spacer mod - i do have a slight leak at the header muffler joint - i get cold engine shift pops and decel pops and the after run BANG! - but nothing that is extreme on the backfires - way better than it was before the 3 turns CCW & the jets.
