Title: cam Tensioner
Post by rodeoclown on 03/05/12 at 16:21:07

Ok reading thru here got me worried about  the cam chain tensioner.I just bought a 1997 s40 with 2455 miles on it so the odometer says I bought it for 1000.00 bucks. A lady was selling it I asked her if she kept up the maintenance and she said that it had a lot more than that done to it,but couldnt recall what all she had done.I dont have my MC license yet so I havent rode it but she did ride it to my house.it was about a 15-20 minute trip. What is the tale tale signs of it going bad or has gone bad?Should I just change it any way?

Not with 2500 miles... Ride it and enjoy for a couple years...
Usually good 'till 15 to 25k miles... Some have gone 40k+ without problems..
Start checking around 12k..

... and ride safe... ;)...

Agreed. Mine was out at 20mm at 17,000 after I had it for exactly 10,000 miles. When you go in for parts call it an LS650 or they will look up SV 650 parts. They're not used to seeing these bikes. S40 came around 2005, I think.

Have fun, but be careful. We all got knots and scars.  ;)

Congraulations on your SAVAGE RodeoClown

They are GREAT bikes.

I replaced my first cam chain at 14000 or so.   You'll be amazied at how easy it is.   Do the Versey adjuster thing about 10,000 ,  and then forget it for the next 20,000 miles.

Mine just rolled over on 40,000 miles last week.
I've had over 30 bikes in my life and could have any one I want now.  Guess what I'm driving?

I replaced mine with the verslavy at 12K. It was time but at 2.5K I'd ride it until you get closer to 10K.
You can always buy one from versy and just look at it for awhile until yours is ready for the switch.

I put one on my brother's bike and he only has about 4K on his but at least it will start making some noise when he needs to change out to the second hole rather then spitting all the guts inside the engine... ;)

I just finished an 88 with 23K on it, the cam chain was just starting to make some noise, after terdown found adjuster on last legs, chain stretched.. Went through all components, replaced chain, adjuster, guide, cam, and several other things.. It is a easy bike to work on...

You got plenty of time to get to know your bike before you start undressing her.   ;D
