Title: '86 Savage Bobber
Post by x1karr0usx on 02/21/12 at 08:27:41

I just got my 1986 Suzuki Savage project *nearly* completed. Some of the old chrome and other shiny parts have some rust and oxidation that needs cleaned up a bit more. I need to fix some of the paint, and potentially send it out for paint (provided my wife doesn't blow our tax return on furniture). And most importantly, I got to get the head cover off to fix a cap leak! But, it is done enough to put some gas in and go for a ride on this beautiful 35 degree day in Pennsylvania.

I read this forum every freaking day and a lot of the bikes posted on this forum got me hyped and inspired, not to mention the ridiculous amount of technical support. Couldn't have done it without ya!  ;)

Youve got no idea just how savage that thing can be till you get a piece of your body in the front pulley, Whatever goes in will be something youll no longer have.

Dude - you have a nice build going there.....pay no mind to the "All the Gear, All the Time" attitude you will find here....People have been running without a chain guard since their BMX days.  Huge open primaries?  Questionable to me at best.  All I can see is my jeans getting caught in there...BUT, simply running no chain guard?  Not even a question.

It's obvious that you have put some time, thought, and effort into your ride...people are always gonna find something to complain about.  Hell, I got blasted for not having any shocks and removing my stock handle bars.   ::)

Sheesh man - if you like the guys bike, tell him.  No need to talk $hit because you personally don't like it.

I've never seen so many "bike cops".  Wowzers man.

Title: Re: '86 Savage Bobber

Belt guard/chain guard whatever.  Point is it's not needed, unless you run into the ATGATT County Sheriffs Office.......

My point is this:  It seems like there is a lot of "holier than thou" on this site.  If we're not running a stock bike we're stupid, or we don't know what we are doing, or we're giving motorcyclists a bad name, or we're gonna kill someone.

This site is pretty informative, and a good source of some good mods.  Just appears to me that there's a lot of "booing" at people that don't necessarily fit into a "mold". IE: Micha Spencers chop - this cat's work....

People need to keep the negative vibe to themselves.  There's a lot of bikes out there that I'm not too hip on.....but it's not..."It's ok, but IIIIIIIII would never (fill in the blank)".  Seems kinda like sneering down the nose to me...

back on topic:
The rear led under the seat is trick.  Are you gonna get rid of the front turn signals?

Title: Re: '86 Savage Bobber
Post by x1karr0usx on 02/21/12 at 12:08:56

haha thanks fellas! didn't mean to start a flame war. the entire left crankcase was marred up pretty bad, and the front sprocket cover seemed to take the most of the scratches. its beyond making it shiny again, but i might put it on and paint it. still got my left leg/foot though.

speaking of the belt....... thats the next to go! going to get the chain mod on there as soon as i can.

the tail light just worked out perfectly and i'm real happy with it. added the rear turn signals to the bottom brackets that i added to hold the fender struts. as far as the front turn signals go - i might just shorten them. i haven't found a good looking replacement yet!

i love the savage's power for being a single cylinder... that gets a lot of comments, since everyone just assumes its a 250. but, like every bike, including the brand new harley's, i don't like the way they look. i don't like the stock savage. i love the way that you sit *into* the frame, versus on top of it (like a cafe racer). this is the sole reason i bought this instead of a kz650.

but, i am pretty happy with how it is coming along. this was a CHEAP buy, and i had to trailer it home. i just dropped it off at the local suzuki mechanic to get the head cap leak fixed and i got quoted at $50. darn, i surely hope that my final bill is around that.. i usually avoid dealership mechanics like the plague.

hope the bike didn't offend you.. just trying to make my style bobber on a tight budget! and at this point, i am pretty close to what i pictured the bike finished. i call that a win in my book   :D

thanks guys

What did you use for that rear fender? Looks kind of similar to the BCB fender.

How is the ride with the rear shocks set like they are? Think that is more comfortable than struts with a spring seat?

About the pulley; I rode without mine for a season. Got my front left pant leg chewed up a bit but nothing more. I ended up putting my cover back on, but that's up to you. I agree it looks better without it, I just decided I'd make some concessions between the look I want and the ride I want. To each their own.

Title: Re: '86 Savage Bobber
Post by x1karr0usx on 02/21/12 at 12:37:53

BCB wanted a ridiculous amount for their fender, so i opted out. i picked mine up at JP Cycles and fabricated the support struts for a total cost of around $140! you have to work it a little bit to wrap around the radius of the tire better.

link for fender: http://www.jpcycles.com/product/711-485

my commute to work is 45 minutes, so i needed to build a bobber that still maintains comfort. when i bought the seat (Rich Phillips Leather), the awesome harley shop i got it from threw in springs and all the hardware to rock a solo springer seat. when it was all together, it sat me up way too high on the bike like a cafe racer. so i ditched the springs and left the rear shocks.

unless im riding on the weekend with jeans, my pants are tucked into my combat boots... so, its staying off unless it kicks garbage all over my uniform before work!  8-)

Lookin' good man.  I myself have removed the chain guard, but I left the pulley cover.  I like the look better, personally, and up here in the wilds of southern Ontario the cops can be pretty merciless with the "fix-it" tickets, so I gotta be careful.  I already got one for no front fender, so I'm in the system now.  >:(

I'm gonna bob down another front fender setup, and I'm gonna go look at a King Sportster tank tonight.  After that, the exhaust system and paint are the last to go.  Oh, and I've got some go-fast stuff coming in from Lancer, pretty soon!  Heres how she stands now (or close enough):

Yeah, I've been lurking over on Chop Cult for a looooong time; about a year, actually.  Great site.  I've gotten a ton of good ideas from there, The Chopper Underground, and Bobbertalk.

I like it, and really like the rear fender.  A Sparto taillight would look awesome on it.  I also like your license plate mount.  Don't think I've seen one mounted like that around here before.  Well done!

So tell me... how LOUD is she?   8-)

Motorcycle fenders, like motorcycle handlebars, seem obscenely overpriced for what they are. Trailer fenders are around $15, yet if you add a little curve to it, suddenly it is a MC fender and is worth $120.

It is a shame more salvage yards don't let you walk around the place and pick out what you want, because there HAS to be a front fender off some bike that will make a nice cheap rear fender.

Title: Re: '86 Savage Bobber
Post by x1karr0usx on 02/22/12 at 12:33:21

i originally had a trailer fender on it... but turned out to be a waste of cash because it looked awful! the one i got from JP Cycles (link above) is pretty sturdy. i welded a tab on the front of the swingarm to bolt the front of the fender on to, then added tabs near the axle to add support struts. its strong enough to stay put, but i wouldn't throw any passenger's on it! the fender doesn't seem nearly thick enough to support any weight. blue collar bobbers wanted over $300 for their fender, and it is so darn tiny. wasn't worth it. i'm better with a saw and some tools than i am with a wrench and an engine  :-/

for the license plate mount, i just threw it on to take it for a spin.. but i will probably re-mount it at the bottom of the shock instead (using the same bracket). i made the bracket out of a strip of aluminum and just bent it accordingly to hold the plate. turned out good enough to keep lol. most of the project turned out kinda lucky like that!

the drag pipe is LOUD! THUMP THUMP THUMP! it has that sweeeeet crackle like a harley. i did put a cheap baffle in there for back pressure though.

with the drag pipe and the K&N style pod filter, i thought for sure that i would have to rejet it, but not at all! runs great, and somehow lost the backfiring and shutoff BOOM along the way. nuts, that powerful blast when i turned the bike off was embarrassing!

thanks for the comments guys!

Where in PA are you located? I'm near Harrisburg and working on a similar build:
http://www.pimptiva.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=3849&g2_serialNumber=2

I'm in the middle of a bunch of projects... Including a trailer fender of sorts, handlebar swap (need longer cables), and bobber/cleanup of battery/wiring.

Title: Re: '86 Savage Bobber
Post by x1karr0usx on 02/23/12 at 11:09:59

im about 5 minutes from Williamsport, PA.

i was able to get away with 10" apes without needing to upgrade to longer cables. the wiring was literally a rat's nest.. either a rat or a small bird called the frame home for awhile. but, she fired right up and worked great for a project bike. lots and lots of clean up though!

the shop that's doing the head cap replacement just called to say that after the cap replacement, they found that the head gasket is throwing some leaks too... GREAT lol.

at least it will be done spitting oil all over my uniform on the way to work!

Looking cool is OK, but something ever gets caught in there with enough bulk to stop the rear wheel (like your foot, or a branch) and your in a lot of sh!t.
Riding is dangerous enough without removing safety features, like guards, lights, shocks, riding at night with a bike painted flat black, and front brakes.

Take yer tampon out.. She's got front brakes and the paint job is, you guessed it, the last step. My uniform tucks into combat boots, so the day I get out of the army and start wearing flip flops and bell bottom cords, I'll *worry* about the front pulley guard. Until then, I might scuff my boots.  ::)

The seat is a Rich Phillips. I absolutely love it. Nothing to it either. The shape fits the stock frame nice, and looks great if you remove the rear support brackets on the frame. If you keep those supports on, I think a sportster seat with a frame mounted fender would look better. But, this seat was nice because it went with the barebones style I was shooting for. Something more *handcrafted* and old school.

On the downside... The crappy shop still has my bike waiting for the head plug and some gaskets. And it has been gorgeous weather since they've had it! As soon as I get it back, it will probably snow for a month! God I gotta move to California lol

I forgot to mention, since you're interested in the seat and tail light.......

You have to weld on brackets on the frame to add both. For the seat, I just laid a piece of flat stock steel where the seat posts sit. The spacing between the seat posts are 7", so you need basically need to add 1" to each side of the frame. Running the flat stock all the way across the frame will give it the best structure anyways. For the tail light, I cut off the rear supports from the frame and welded the flat stock butted against those cuts, then rounded it off real nice. I'm not the BEST or CLEANEST welder, but after I made sure it was welded good, I smoothed everything out with some bondo.. The bolts on the tail light are spaced too far apart to fit on the bracket, so you have to rig a bracket for the light to mount to, then mount that bracket to the frame.

I'll take some pictures of all of that once I get my bike back. I took my bike to a reputable dealership, but they apparently hire shade tree mechanics! Took a week to order parts, then while putting the head back together, they ripped the head gasket... That was a week ago. Still waiting to get the beast back. I'm especially pissed since it's a darn near 60 degree Saturday!  >:(

Got the paint done. I still need to clean up some of the finish on the crankcase and on the handlebar controls (not to mention the scars the mechanics left behind, as soon as Suzuki America gives me the go ahead!)..

She's so close to being complete on a project that I am sure will never end.

yeah, if i had mid controls, i would be worried.. but with the forwards, my boots and leg clears that whole area. so unless i start dangling my feet while i drive, it won't be a problem.

skeebo, you know darn well I'll be getting one of your boxes! those things are beautiful!

thanks for the comments. I love chopped/bobbed bikes, but usually the builder leaves them finished as rat bikes. ultimately, I wanted to build a bobber that looks like it came off a factory line by adding a good paint and a good fender. nothing against flat black, I just wanted a very shiny/sparkly bobber. oh, and most importantly, on a budget! I still have some finishing touches that need done, but she's almost there. just got the raptor petcock on and it is running greeeaaat.

total cost (including the bike): $1500  :o
