Title: Hole in end of header
Post by Skate on 02/21/12 at 05:58:41

When I took the header off last night I noticed a small (.25 to .375" diameter) hole that would be at the 6 o'clock position of the header when mounted, about 2.5" in from the outlet. It doesn't go through and may not be very deep, but I wondered if this was normal or if it a sign of wear. Thanks.

Don't think that's normal, but it's a double wall header, so it probably ain't leaking..........

Does it look drilled, or rusted through, or punctured?...

Serowbot: Thanks for the input. That confirms what I believed. I wondered if it was possibly a thin spot from welding on the outer ring (if that's what's done) during fab.

It looks as though it is wearing through but has not penetrated. The edges are a bit ragged. Would TIG or MIG welding it be too hot for the chrome on the outside? What other methods would you recommend for pathcing the hole so it doesn't grow?

Does this manufacturing hole have chrome over it / in it?   If so, leave it alone, it isn't going to "rust out".

Mine has one of these manufacturing "hanger holes" --  it goes nowhere and does nothing to the function of the system.   Has faithfully done nothing for years and years now.

As the interior gets quite hot, it's probably a vent hole.  Otherwise pressure could build up and blow out the shell.

Welding it close could cause a problem, as it may vent slowly thru somewhere else.  And when it cools, it will colapse the shell.

and, you're not supposed to weld chrome.
