Title: Hate that petcock valve? 20 min 20 cent mod.
Post by palehorseman on 02/19/12 at 08:53:40

Disregard this post. I spoke too soon... the valve performed exactly as i stated....
But...
Verslagin was 100%  correct... the valve was not factory after all. Behind the gasket/diaphram was all modded.
One of the passages in the plastic conical valve itself was closed...
The rubber washer was removed...
thereby making a seal between the valve and valve body... for lack of better terminology.
It drove me nuts after i got so many "that wont work" s. :'(
It did work... but you guys were all right on the money!
No way that would work on a factory valve.)
I bow down to those of you who knew.
Im a mechanic... but not a make specific mechanic. I make work what i have to work with. You guys know this thing inside and out. Problem is it looks stock but its not. I just found a timing chain tensioner that looks like one of verslagins.
My bad!
I  was wrong :)

There's a mod for that...
You figured it out for yourself...;)...
... but a Raptor will turn more smoothly...
Check out the link for a few additional ideas...

Yeh but its not 20cents or 20 min n i would've had to leave the shop to get one or different parts...Plenty of options out there. This is one. No need to dissassemble the valve this way. You dont even need to pull the valve off for that matter. Did i miss this mod in that thread? I didnt see it. I saw alot of mods... but not this one.

Won't work.
pushing in the diaphragm shuts off the petcock.
prime has a spring that pushes open the diaphragm, which you can't do cause you've filled in the void with jb weld.

reserve is vacuum operated too.

Tank ran dry?

I tested the valve beforehand with a primitave meathod... sucked air from the fuel barb and changed the selector sw. Air passed through except on "on". Hooked to vac and on functioned. Properly. If reserve is vac op then mine was defective. And i didnt spend time checking for propper operation...just what it was doing.
Things are supposed to be alot of ways... its how they are that concerns me.

See the upper left part of the pic...

backside is the vac port, if you cut it off and just sealed over the port...
only prime will work as manual on.

If reserve works, then you don't have manual off.
as the little o-ring is shot.

prime has a spring that opens the valve.
reserve does not.

Look if you pm me an email ill go video it right now for ya. But this forum is not what i'd call upload friendly n id rather be turning wrenches than reading about overly complicated instructions. I assure you... it does work. I'll prove it. N when i do i expect a retraction n apology

It scratches my frame finish everytime i pull the tank.

This can be prevented by giving the tail of the tank a thump to the left with the heel of the hand after unbolting the tank and before lifting it. On reinstallation, put a bit of duct tape on the frame. Leave a few inches of tape hanging down so you can grab it and pull it off after the tank is in place (but before bolting it down).

Versy is right... With the mod you did,.. you should have Off-On-Off... with no reserve...
Basically you just plugged the vac tap, only from the inside...

Try Bobo's mod if you want a reserve... it takes a little more work, but doesn't cost any more...

Right on...

i suppose i should have left that out or atleast put it last. In order of concern it was primarilly vac assisted on off that is first on my list of "reasons to" alter. I guess my words didnt convey my goals accurately. Good tip! But it doesnt really fix my main "reason too".
That aftermarket valve does the trick. But i prefer to alter existing or make my own parts. Bolt on stuff is good and fast and allegidly tested... n expensive...  :)but i chop/build the way rat rods and vintage choppers came to be... pre corporate customs if u get me.

I dont know man... i went out there and videod it because i was second guessing myself. I sent it to the moderators. Now if your sure ill go pull it apart and see if it was altered before i did it.  But at present it IS definately operating as i claim. Pm me and Ill gladly email it. I suppose its possible the washer is cracked missing or otherwise altered but i dont know. If anyone has a spare perform the primitive test i used to direct my actions. Its sleeting and fourty out there. And i almost got the smell of my stale test gas off me. Id rather not go out again if someone can do that.
