Title: Petcock
Post by Doug on 02/15/12 at 22:41:07

Well I drained the gas out of my bike today for the first time and noticed that it was pouring very slowly no matter what position I had the petcock tab in. The gas wasn't too old, maybe 3 weeks so I don't think it got gunk'd up. Anyone have an explanation for this ...is it something to worry about.

gas cap vent may be clogged.

cold?

old?

That makes sense. Yes it's both of those. I'm trying to wait till it warms up before I get my hands dirty. My money situation keeps me in check though.  ;D

Stock petcock shouldnt drain at all except in Prime position. It isnt fast, its a small passageway for the fuel to flow thru & theres a screen filter it pases thru,How slow is slow?

Well... I guess it's not too slow considering those factors, but it does pour in any position. The second I took it out it was trickling.

snot sposed to. It shouldnt "Trickle" with the lever forward or down & it should be a full flow out of the outlet from the petcock with the lever to the rear.

You think it's fixable? If not, should I replace it with one of those raptors?

Yep, & while youre in there, it would be a good time to build a pigtail for a float charger. I went to Radio Shack & got audio jacks & put one on the 4 wheeler & lawnmower. Keeping old pukey batteries alive! Just hafta be cool stripping them so you dont wreck the ground, since its woven around the hot side. They are both pretty small, but, theyll handle the current of a float charger & they make for a tidy installation. & you dont have 2 ends to hook up, just plug it in & youve got the + & - in one connection. Put the female end on the bike. A real OCD type would problee build a plate & mount the thing so all youd have to do is walk up & plug in one handed. Just make sure its positioned so as to not get mud/water in it.

& If the petcock never really stops allowing gas to the carb, its POssible youve had gas dribble down its throat & into the oil. Which isnt considered to be a Good Thing by most folks. If the float valve in the carb doesnt close off completely, then the carb can flood & allow fuel to dribble into the intake. If the intake valves are open then fuel can dribble into the cylinder & Ooooze past the rings & into the oil,.
Problee didnt happen, but Id have to change the oil on mine if I found a messed up petcock. Oil is cheap, bearings & stuff inside the engine? Ehhhh,, not so cheap..

My Battery Tender Jr. came with a pigtail as well as several other attachments.  I thought that was cool.

Doug, my local shop has a jug full of pigtails factory made, but they are about $10 each. If you decide to get a Raptor petcock the part number is 5LP-24500-01-00. About $20-25. Bolts right on, but you have to plug or cap the vacuum nipple on the right side of the carburetor.

The exact fit for the vacuum plug cap can be found at Advance Auto, you don't have to rig anything.
