Title: carb rebuild Post by lostcause on 02/10/12 at 10:08:13 Ok. I am getting ready to dive into the rebuild of my girlfriends 87 Savage. I drained the carb and even though what came out was pretty much toxic waste instead of fuel, the thing will start and run. I have to deal with the cam tensioner yet,and I will. Anyway, I am gonna go through the carb and deal with the little plastic washer/air fuel screw situation. So, I need a carb kit,and the correct little washer dealies. I'd like to collect these parts before I start, even if I find I don't need it all. So, anybody know a good source for one-stop shopping? If there is a member that can supply what I need, lemme know and I am a customer. Thanks guys |

Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/10/12 at 10:48:05 Id clean the carb up & leave it stock & see how it runs. 87 is old enough to have decent jetting. Right now, its been sitting & loaded with goop. Youve no idea how it runs until you clean it up & get the carb working its best, |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by verslagen1 on 02/10/12 at 10:55:50 if it runs why are gonna risk messing it up? clean it, put it back together, if you got a problem, we'll fix it. know if you got a problem before you fix it. and you don't need the full kit. float valve and gasket is all. |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by lostcause on 02/10/12 at 11:59:43 Yea,yer right.Don't fix what ain't broke. Right now the thing runs, which really surprised me. But it won't come off idle. Any throttle at all and it dies. I didn't mention that before, but that's why I wanna go through the carb. Above and beyond the current running condition, I figured it would be way lean from the factory, I didn't know that the 87 may be jetted OK. Thanks for the link and info guys. Verslagen, I'll be after a tensioner soon. I'll keep ya posted. |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by verslagen1 on 02/10/12 at 12:53:14 87's are jetted rich compared to the new bikes. you may not need to do anything. If fact, I put an '88 carb on and I replaced the 155 jet with a 152 |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by lostcause on 02/10/12 at 13:55:32 Gotcha. Good to know. Gonna get into this weekend. Might as well. Right now, 10 degress in Northern WI. Tonight, wind chill -25 to -30. I'm so happy. |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by AlphaBarney on 02/10/12 at 14:53:02 Don't forget to check the air filter, too, while you're fiddling around with cleaning and tuning the carb. You'll want a nice clean one in there. |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by Serowbot on 02/10/12 at 15:18:36 I don't think the 87' needs a spacer washer either,... pretty sure they have a needle with adjustable clip... Only reason you need a kit is if the float is leaking or sticking... |

Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by Jsud04 on 08/26/14 at 04:05:52 Hey lancer, any chance you could throw some guidance out there specifically for carb tuinig of the 80's models? I have an 86 I wanna open up the exhaust and air filter on... |
Title: Re: carb rebuild Post by YoungSavage on 08/29/14 at 07:59:51 I'm no Lancer but the tech section would be the best place to find carb tuning; even for the 80's cycles. It's a best of averages. |
