Title: New to the boards
Post by MrVito on 02/04/12 at 14:31:44

Hey all, just picked up a 1987 LS650 with only 9300 miles and a clean title for $250. Time to order jets and other maintenance items, going to stop the backfiring before I even get her registered!

Welcome!  We love our thumpers!  That thing looks like it's in great condition for an '87, wow!

good find!

just a couple of things to be aware of...

cam chain adjuster and engine kickback on shutdown.

the cam chain adjuster can fall apart if you let the cam chain stretch too far.  The maintenance manual calls for retorqueing the head bolts every 5k miles, but no one does that (well almost no one) and so the cam chain never gets checked either.  I recommend you check it before too long.  see http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1191167029

engine kickback on shutdown is a problem they solved in '95 when they added the torque limiter for the starter.  What happens is when you shut off the engine will spin down, ocassionally it will stop on the compression stroke and spin backward.  If it spins backward enough it can engage the starter clutch and try to drive it.  but it can't so it will break out the case.  But I have a fix for that.  see  http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1288911670

$250 for a 9300 mile bike. That'd probably gitcha incarcerated some places. Believe me, you found the right bike at a ridiculous price, and this forum is the best thing you ever joined. Welcome aboard!

Fresh gas, cleaned the carb, new oil, cleaned up spark plug, cleaned the air filter and now she runs! Sorry for the poor video, it was taken with my phone.

great!

sounds like someone modified the muff
so be aware that it may run lean, but with stock '87 jets should be fine.

Keep in mind these engines are known for backfire on deceleration. It can be controlled and minimized by throttle action.
It can be minimized by elliminating any exhaust leaks, and by adjusting the air/fuel mix screw, (under the brass plug) but in most cases we learn to (love) live w/ some backfire.

Vito, would you like to make a hundred dollars?...CASH! Great buy. I would make sure the tires and brakes are safe and ride, ride, ride. Get on the forum a couple of times a week, look into the technical section, ride. Soon your education comes together with practical experience. Then you'll know what you want to do with your blank canvas. Be safe and, did I mention? RIDE.  Boofer  :)

Ignore Boofer, he's trying to swindle you. I'd be able to give you 250 over what you paid and my wife would still kiss me when I came home.

You sir, got an amazing deal!
