Title: Bobber Elec. Tank (PICS)
Post by skeebo on 02/04/12 at 09:50:07

Hey all, weekends here, my materials arrived this week so its time to finish my fake oil tank. I was going to buy this kit from TC bros. for 75.00 bucks, which is a good deal, however I saw one up close and there is a couple things I did not like. The diameter was a little small for my taste and the
welded bungs wont fit between the frame rails limiting mounting options.

I decided to spend the money on materials and build one.

I really like the look of the 5 inch diameter......good size.

This bike is set-up for a swingarm mounted battery, the tank will hold elec. with room to spare.

The tank turned out great, It took care of a bunch of issues I had going on  and really cleaned up that area on the bike. If anyone is interested I will be posting something in Marketplace, I have a box of caps and tubing left over to fab some kits. Email or PM me if interested.

Thats a good job. How much did the material run ya? Where can i get some? The last tank i fabbed was a recycled 5lb fire extinguisher...that took alot more fab than this would. Sure would appreciate a link to a supplier.

The tubing is the easy part, the caps are a treasure hunt. They are made by Deep Drawn Industries, which sells them for secondary fabrication ( fire ext. , cans etc. ) There is a minimum order which I split with a partner.

I'm thinking about maybe trying something similar with PVC for additional storage.

I'm thinking 4" PVC would do it.  I may still want one of your kits though.  Different deal altogether.  It just got me thinking...

the battery box itself is 5 1/4'' long, 5 1/4'' tall and 3 1/4'' wide. I built it around the same battery I run below my swing arm, Yuasa YTZ7S mid-size AGM  4 1/2 x 4 1/8 x 2 3/4.  So If you drop a mimi lithium in there you got room for a sanwhich......

Those end caps look like the tool you get with speedy sleeves to repair a worn shaft where a seal rides. The seal will wear a groove on the shaft and a speedy sleeve is a very thin sleeve that covers the worn area. You can use the same size seal as it will give that small amount. The sleeve has a lip on it for installation that you can leave on or peal off if it is in the way. The tool is a cup just like those end caps that you use to tap the sleeve on then throw the cup away. A truck repair shop or heavy equipment shop might have some stuck under their bench that would be the right size just for the asking.   Carl

Is it Thursday yet?! :) This thing can't come soon enough... Although then I'll have to get the ambition to tackle putting the bike back together.

Need to call the local shop to source some new cables... Or go back to some drag bars of sorts... And work out a fender, and turn signals... :P

Greenmonster,

Should work with the stock fender, It uses the the lower fender mounts. I can throw a fender on to check clearances if you are interested.

My drag bars are flat.....I'm looking at these for a little rise.

Skeebo,

It would be very kind of you to check that for me. Working in that area would be a joy if there was a little more room in there.

 Greenmonster,
The only clearance issue I had rattling round in my head was how close the rear of the battery box gets to the fender......plenty of room.

Longer fender bolts pass-through factory bungs and capture battery box rear mount.

Got the box mounted up, smaller battery installed, now to get the wires put into the box/extended/routed/etc...

Debating how I want to handle everything else at this point. The seat sits a little higher than I wanted because of the battery box mounts being under there. I'm thinking about taking out that setup, welding a piece of metal across the frame there to mount the solo seat mount to that instead... Cut off the back pieces of the frame that hold the solo seat up now, that would let it sit lower in the back, or put springs there, etc...

Lots to consider yet with this setup... But I love the look of it so far. :)
