Title: rectifier/regulator grounded to frame?
Post by wombat on 02/01/12 at 15:19:58

Can someone with a stock Savage see if their rectifier/regulator is electrically isolated from its mounting point on the rear fender.  I can't see that it matters, but someone on this forum once said that he had to have his insulated from its metal support on a Ryca CS-1 to make the bike run. Never heard of this before, but now I'm wondering...

No it's not.
And it's the same for several bikes over several years.
that person probably had a short in their rectifier.

Thought so. Thanks for the confirmation.

So does it matter if the regulator/rectifier is grounded or not?

No, mainly for heat dissipation.

So there is no need to check on whether or not it is grounded.  It'll work either way.

My Ryca build kept blowing fuses until I removed the rectifier's metal mounting bolts and mounted it with heavy duty velcro instead.

It's possible that it was just a weird internal short that coincidentally went away when I changed the mounting method and isolated the rectifier from the metal battery box, but that seems unlikely to me.

Verslagen1 knows way more about these bikes than me -- I'm just telling you what I think happened with mine.  Your experience may differ...
