Title: Stripped out seat mount
Post by liltimmy on 01/31/12 at 07:26:21

The 10mm nut welded to the back of the set mount stripped out. Any suggestions on the fix?

drill it out and tap it to the next size ,might have to drill the tank tab out the diameter of your new bolt also, if you wanna stick with the same size grind the srtipped nut off and weld a new one on. OR zipties and tape and glue.

That's not a problem,... it's an opportunity...
Drill the hole smooth and install a pair of these... you'll have a quick release seat, no tools necessary...
;)...

This definitely needs to be in the tips and tricks or tech section if it is not already. Good idea even if the original bolts are not stripped.

It's called a MARINE DETENT PIN...
You can get'em at Ace Hardware, or most any good hardware place...
I forgot what size... just take your seat in, and fit one...
(They're kinda' pricey for a pin).. I just had a couple layin' around that fit...
I added some links from a dog choker so I wouldn't lose them,
...and 'cause I thought it looked cool... ;D...

I'll have to put together a post with all the types I have and let you pick.

You just drill out the threads with a 1/4" drill and pop these in.

It's the side nut on the right side. So just drill it out to 1/4 inch hole and grab two(might as well do them both) MARINE DETENT PINS from carrlane. Or some from verslagen1. Am I correct on this? Just want to be sure cause I'm a poor man. Can't waste money. Wonder if the one in back on my '05  not a split seat.  :'(  . For tool-less removal of the whole seat.

For the side nuts that's right.

For the rear... can't say, you'll have to lead on this as I don't have one.

I would worry about it striking the tire if you bottomed out.
So this would have to be checked.  It might be far back enough that it would never contact.

Here are the pins I have on hand...
http://www.savageriders.com/verslagen/ForSale/Lockingquickpins.jpg
The one on the right is the one I'm using.
The black T is a little short but I can make them longer.
The button head is too short.
And the ring handle is the kind I used for my harlet seat mod.
For that one, I bend the seat bracket up a little and drill thru the frame.  And the pin goes into the frame to lock.

So let me know what you want, $10 a pair inc shipping.

I like the ones you are using but I would like the heavy duty ring like the one on the left. Also, I was wondering if you might have the one on the left that will fit through the whole without drilling for the rear bolt test we talked about.

Thought about this for a minute...
easy way to determine the clearance.
1. remove shocks and let the tire ride on the fender.
2. remove the rear bolt and stick a pin thru the threaded hole.
3. measure the length that can protrude thru to stike the tire.

If it's over half an inch no worries at all.

Then I would just need to know how much grip you'd need.
block the back side of the mounting location.
stick the pin in and measure the length that sticks in from the top of the bracket to the backside.

The button head would look good there.

The back bolt is covered by the wiring protector plate under the fender so, I have decided to forego that for an acorn bolt instead. Can you PM me on where to send you payment for the pins?

I'm checking the fit of the button head with another member.
We will know in a week.

Ok patiently waiting here.

We're still fiddlin' with it.
But 3 pins same length will work.
but you may need to add a washer to get a tighter fit on the 3rd one.

He also had to drill thru the inner fender to let it go in far enough to engage.  The pins I like have a little extra material on the end and could be ground back to fit.  That would leave the inner fender whole and keep dirt away from the pin.

Or if you dont want to make mods, buy a helicoil kit. They work quite well.

We have a solution for the back bolt.  It takes the same pin as the sides, but you either have to drill thru the inner fender or trim back the tip of the pin.

Finger access on the sides is limited, the short lever operated or ring pull pins work best.

I shoulda bin followin' this thread more conscientiously, since I'm the "other member" to whom Versy refers above. Sorry.

After trying several options, I settled on three of the lever-action pins - the ones Versy himself uses. The lever makes them easy to install/remove in the limited space on the sides of the seat. Likewise easy under my OEM rack on the rear. Easier than the T handle in all locations, because of space limitations.. They come with S hooks on the lever, which I've left on for the moment.

Note that I drilled BARELY through the inner fender. With the pin installed, you can just feel the tip if it poking through - no worries about tire contact.

This is certainly one of the simplest yet most satisfying and worthwhile changes I've made on my bike. Since so many projects start with "first, remove seat", being able to do so in seconds, while standing almost upright, beats the wrench thing all hollow. If you're wondering whether to go ahead & do it, I would say: GO AHEAD & DO IT!

Oh, and Versy is a fine - and patient! - fellow, much deserving of your business.

Ok. How much for all three pins and detailed instructions. For Arizunos' set up. I am good at following directions but not so good at guessing sizes. Payment arrangements? Do you have PayPal?
