Title: engine rpm questions
Post by RycaShawn on 01/29/12 at 18:59:41

at 65mph, what rpms will the motor be spinning at? Around 5000? What's the redline too? Is there a speed limiter or rev limiter?

about 4400
redline is 6500
no, but you'll never get there with a stock engine while in gear.

Really? Mine gets there easily. One time I was passing a car on a country road and got on it hard in 3rd gear and the speedo showed about 77mph and the tach about 6,700rpm when I looked down and I thought "oh sh.t" and quickly shifted into 4th. I was surprised myself but it did it actually fairly quick to get there. Stock motor with baffle removed, open airbox and 150 main jet.

I guess I have to amend that...

you'll never get there in the correct gear.

So what's the top speed of a 5 speed LS650?

100 or there abouts

I think you could redline, and even blow something in 1, 2, or even 3rd (but, you'd have to be really wanting to..)( the engine would have been finished accelerating a thousand rpm before that)...
... but our engine don't have the power to redline 4th or 5th....
We peter out in the low to mid 90's depending on tune, but need to get to 100mph to reach red...

Going by my tach and speedometer, 95mph equals 6,500. That was on a totally flat smooth superslab with about 10mph tail wind. That was the best it could do.

That's possible... was your rear tire, well worn, or low profile?...

FYI
the ignitor unit "cut off" is 10k rpm per ssm pg 12-12

Whoa, so I guess the bottom end can take 10k?

10k is a good cut off # for a GSXR mebbe, not a Savage.   Why did they pick that number?

Where was this information from again?

(Not aware of us being able to find a black box cut off reference when we were warring that topic several times several years ago.  Looking for the new information source that has been found.)

An opinion stated by several is that flow and cam issues limit the rpm on stock engines to a fall off at a flat spot that gets wallish around 6-7,000 rpm.

Once you get cammed and flowed, you can go higher -- until the valves float anyway.   Valves float before 10,000 rpm.  Stock piston is non-interference with the valves, so floating simply means you can't rev any higher with only mild overheating of the valves during the episode because you stop the run up when it happens and you shift to the next gear.

Never have seen my max speed in 5th, have seen it in 4rd and close to it in 3th.  Felt bad realizing I'd run it up that tight in 3rd, bad form to do that to your bike but it has happened a few times and the bike survives.

This is one of the reasons I don't think you need a drive chain mod for overdrive, the stock belt is "correct gearing" for a cammed, opened up bike because you can turn a lot of extra rpms.

You lack torque and hp to drive redline in 5th gear even when your bike is heavily modified -- it never gets there in the mountains.   4th gets there kinda slowly, you do most of the span in 3rd then shift.

5th gear is an interstate or open road 'overdrive' gear that is no use in town or in the mountains.

and you obviously can't spin a motor to 10k if power drops off way before that.

Stock tire, still at about 50% useful life. My bike revs to 6,500rpm easily in the first 2 gears. In 2nd that equals 55mph. 3rd gear that means 75mph, but has to scream a little to make it there. 4th gear means about 85mph but has to scream a bit longer. 5th gear usually tops out around 90mph on a flat road and not much wind going. That means about close to 6,200rpm. On a good day she can do 95, but only if the wind is from the rear. I cannot go out and say that I'm gonna do 95. I don't rev above 6,500rpm anymore, because it doesn't help acceleration. Shifting at 6,000rpm latest is better performance on a pretty much stock setup.

What do you guys weigh?  Maybe the savage will do the ton if piloted by a light-weight .  .  .

I'm 140lb,.. and I topped out at 95mph, tucked like paint... with K/N, Dyna, and rejet... 140/90-15 rear...
... maybe if could find  5 mile 30 degree downgrade?... 20mph tailwind?... ;D...

I think you qualify as a light weight (although you would be a big guy in the moto gp crowd).

Thanks for the info--I had hoped to see triple digits on this bike, but at 150 lbs, will have to be satisfied with low to mid 90s, I suppose.

Ah well.  I already have a bike that will get me a "fast driving award" without even trying.  Maybe this bike will help keep me out of trouble.  ;) ;D ::)

90 uphill
stock engine, supertrapp, pod filter, mt90-16 rear, ~50mpg, 240, eyeball level with flyscreen, grin ear to ear, occassional evil laugh.   [smiley=evil.gif]

95 uphill before I hit traffic, ~40mpg
as above with quicksilver carb, double grin.

10k rpm from suzuki service manual(c1990) page 12-12 where it shows how to test the ignitor unit

Good to know there seems to be a spec for it.
A little while back when I tested it with a function generator and an o'scope I didn't find a rev limiter because I didn't go above 8500 rpm.Didn't figure I needed to since the redline on the engine is 6500.
Shows what I know! ;)
