Title: Muffler Dyna swap.  Small issues to resolve.
Post by oceantransistor on 01/20/12 at 16:02:34

I have a Savage 03'.  Just got it last year and decided I should work on it myself since it seems like the mechs in San Diego know as little about it as I do.

I swapped out the old muffler with a DYNA as recommended. I get a lot of backfire pop now when shifting.  Any ideas what I need to adjust?

There was no gaket from the engine to the head exhaust. Should I order an original or is there a cheap aftermarket version? I'm asumming the old one burned away or was never replaced.

Any suggestions for a heat shield between the muffler exhaust connection?

Finally I dont have the tools to clean up my exhaust pipe. I've seen wraps online and I'm looking for recommendations.  I saw a chrome wrap 2" thick.  How many feet would I need? Is it a good alternative?

Overall it sounds a lot better and the cricket is gone. I can't wait to work out these small problems.

:)

You probably do have a header gasket,.. it was likely just stuck in place,.. but if you have a leak there, buy a new one...
I put my new one in with my old one... (double gasket)...
Header gasket leak will definitely cause backfires... ;)...

Hey!  :D
Thanks for the Harley Dyna guide. It worked perfectly.  Due to the position, I only had to use one bolt aswell.  What would be a good queu to stop torquing the clamp?

To check the header pipe to engine seal hold a flame around it as you rev it.. like a lighter or a candle..

Awesome, I went on EBay and ordered the gasket right away.  I'm pretty sure I'm missing the gasket.  Ive been having a bit of backfire issues since I bought it.  During the muffler swap I took of the header completely off and reached in there to check.  Seems like someone was trying to play mech with the bike before me.

Luckly, I found this forum and it rocks!  ;D

Ocean, in case you didn't show us that ugly joint for clarity, you can get a seven inch chrome heat shield for about $20 and cover the joint. Mine came from JC Whitney.  :)

I have the Harley Dyna muff on my 06 and I just used the stock chrome cover over the joint. I did need to drill a hole in the mount on the bike to get it bolted on, but not to tough for a 1/2" drill. With the factory chrome cover, It still looks great.
