Title: verslagen or serowbot or oldfeller or boule'tard
Post by baker87 on 01/17/12 at 19:59:08

so i have just found a serious problem and was wondering if the timing chain tensioner coming apart could cause u to loose 5th gear?

i modified it myself it was crude but it works...

i have spots where the chain tensioner hit the clutch basket...

I can't imagine how...
5th should be right where you left it,... once you replace the camchain...
;)...

That alone wouldn't do it.
but if it locked up, could've busted a gear.  but never heard of it.

Nope, not unless a chunk of metal trash got into your gear case and fouled something up in the gear clusters/shifting forks.

You do realize you can live a full and productive life around town without a 5th gear?   Theoretically you can get up to 85-90 mph in 4th gear with a stock savage with the proper mods?

It would bug me, but I wouldnt split the cases to fix it. The RPM drop between 4th & 5th is too small to worry about it.

where could i find pics of trans assembly? i would too see where fifth gear is in the trans.... i think something demolished the gear or cast iron shift fork... and how detrimental is it to the engine too run it at highway speeds for a extended amount of time?

Since the tranny in inside the case halves and the tensioner is not,  the metal piece from the tensioner would sink then flow into the small case holes down low.   Chances are it's not a chunk stuck somewhere.   The part(s) is probably in the oil muck on the bottom of the cases that never drains out.

ALSO.....   the tranny is a constant mesh tranny.  If something got into the gears,  you would hear it in every gear since they are all moving.

When I rebuild my engine (bought the bike with engine in pieces due to melted piston), I split the cases to clean up the small pieces of aluminum from the piston.  There was only one or two tiny pieces in the gears and remember, the piston is in the same section of the case as the gears.   The tensioner is not.

I would check the linkage adjustment.  If I recall correctly, going into fifth was a tad bit more of a stretch/click to get in. Check the cheap stuff first.

As a FYI, the 5th gear, from the parts diagram (see tech section), is the second gear in from the output side of the tranny (far side of pict below).

Here's a pict I took when I had the cases apart.

Won't hurt the tranny at all... extended rides at 70+mph will cause some oil usage (that's kinda' normal for a big thumper)...
I'd check the level at each fill-up...

(I also tend to get a big backfire coming off throttle, after an extended 70+ run)...  I think it's the pipe getting too hot...

I concur with Serow

Ive got an 86 and its only a 4 speed.
Spot on about oil usage, and the fact that it does just fine at 70 mph. (however its not fun for distance rides to be stuck around 70-80 mph and be almost flat out. )
