Title: Gabby Giffords...
Post by Serowbot on 01/08/12 at 23:24:35

It's one year today since Az. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords survived being shot in the head...
She's a biker you know... not just for photo ops... 20 years, many bikes...
Her goal was, and still is, to go round trip to Argentina on her classic BMW...
I'll bet she's the only Beemer rider that actually ever returned waves...
;D...
Peace...

I hope she rides again soon! Pretty classy woman!

While she is a classic example of courage and class, especially after what happened to her, I do hope that sympathy for her doesn't result in her re-election.

From everything I've seen and read, she hasn't, and likely won't, return to completely normal function, mentally or physically.

I certainly applaud her for her gutsy approach to life now, but again, is she really fit and able to be a member of Congress?

You have to be fit and able to be a member of Congress now? When did they pass that law?

I knew when I typed that post that I'd get comments like these from the peanut gallery.

But the question remains.

Loughner's in prison not far from St. Louis. He's at the US Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, MO,  not far from Bass Pro Headquarters.  Apparently, he’s not exactly the ideal prisoner, throwing chairs etc…

Maybe he’ll stand trial, maybe he won’t. If I had to guess, I expect he’ll end up like John Hinckley (Reagan shooter) and be confined and “treated” rest of his life. Maybe get a couple escorted leaves from time to time.   Fair / not fair? Who knows. I’m against death penalty which is a hard position to hold in this case I’ll admit.

Jerry, here in Missouri, we elected a dead man’s wife as Senator and let her waste a few years in Congress in the ultimate display of sympathy voting so don’t count anything out.

Besides, from what I saw of Giffords, at half her mental capacity, she’s miles ahead of the Georgia Congressmen who thought the island of Cuba would flip over and capsize if we added more troops to one side of the island.

WM -

The real shame is that this wacko was never identified before he could kill and maim.  Of course, just identifying him doesn't necessarily prevent his rampage, unless we had a way to intervene, and giving any arm of gov't that kind of power could be very dangerous.

To me, his parents or other family members are almost as responsible as he would be - they, at least, had to know that this guy was so far out of it that some intervention was needed.  Just looking at his face in his booking picture tells anyone what they had on they hands.

From what I've read,.. the bullet's damage was mainly to her speech  and language center, effecting her once quick and eloquent  voice, .. but not her mental abilities...
If she runs again,.. I will surely vote for her...
I'm sure she can still outwit most of her contemporaries...  ;)...

Considering the prejudices people have against physical and mental handicaps you would probably be among a very few who would vote for her.

You don't need brains or common sense to be a member of congress,You need a rich daddy.

speaking of brains, my daughter got this great book and is a must read for anyone.

It's a good explanation of why Giffords may recover almost fully, but at the same time, is a good explanation of why she may reach a level and never progress beyond.

One of the neatest books I've ever read.

You should vote for the person you believe will do the best job for your state or country. And what is best for the country may not necessarily make your life easier.  :)
