Title: Muffler replacement
Post by oceantransistor on 01/02/12 at 15:29:15

There's a cricket living in my exhaust.  According to the forums it's usually best to just replace it.  Does anyone recommend any after market exhausts and places to get one for a  good price?

HARLEY DYNA, seems to be the pick of the litter. Can usually be had for about $30. Check local Harley shops and custom shops to see if someone will sell you a "Factory take off" before you pay shipping and such on Ebay.

Here's the Official Savage.com Harley Muffler guide...

ENJOY! ;D

Dyna, cheap, available, cuts a ton of weight off the bike & looks tons better. AAAAAAnd it sounds better, too.
Or, ya could spend a fortune & get a Supertrapp. Not as pretty but a better performance booster.

I have the same problem and just bought a pair of new (100 miles) Dyna mufflers off ebay.  Going to use one myself but not going to use both. If you don't have any luck finding one locally I'd sell one at a reasonable price -- pm me if interested.

I'm also looking to switch the pipe to the exhaust out, it looks like crap. I don't know how to restore the chrome look, any suggestions?

This stuff works like magic:

You don't even need the random orbit sander except for really, really, really tough places...

well amazingly easy to start with... a wad of aluminum foil and a little water will take the tops off the rusty spots.  once rough rusty chrome will be smooth w/out scratches.  I'd go that route 1st then the blue job for any blueing you have.

I bought some of this stuff a couple of years ago, that little container only had about a table spoon full of the powder in it.

It does work..i spent hours getting almost what the vid shows in 30 seconds.....maybe Triumph chrome is different or i got a bad blue job?

Yeah you do get a tiny bit, but mine seemed to stretch further than expected.. in my opinion the vid doesn't do justice for the stuff because I was able to hand polish a helluva lot more with my hands than I thought.. took me about 30 minutes for the underside of the head pipe...

I replaced my muffler with a Harley Dyna muffler. Went to the closest Harley dealer and got the muffler for free. Throw outs in their opinion.

About the down pipe, i decided to get mine ceramic coated semigloss. Now i dont have to worry about blueing or rust.

I have no idea what the dyno does for performance but the Supertrapp seemed like to me it gave my bike alot more get up and go over the stock muffler.. Nice deep rumble sound. But any muffler is a improvement over that 200 lb stock muffler. I was kinda embarrassed to ride around with the stock muffler it was so quiet. The supertrapp is polished stainless steel and will turn to a gold color after some time. Pretty expensive but worth the money. Around $400, but sometimes you can find one for around $250. With Lancers cam and rejetting and the supertrapp it makes the bike a whole lot more fun

Stinger,

My 10 year old Supertrapp is chromed steel.  Are you saying they have changed the design to polished stainless steel?  I seriously doubt it.

Supertrapp makes a wide range of pipes; different styles and different finishes. I've seen them in Chrome, stainless, flat black paint, depending on the style. You guys probably just don't have the exact same pipe, that's all.
I would think that just about any of the Supertrapp pipes would work on the Savage as long as the inlet pipe diameter is correct.

Teabowl13,

I assumed that stinger was talking about the slip-on that Supertrapp recommends for the LS650, part number 728-50650, which is chromed steel.  You are right, anything can be modified to fit if you have the necessary skills and tools.

Tip: If you need an adapter for your header pipe to muffler, just go to your local muffler shop and have them bend/cut/resize a piece of pipe, then buy a chrome heat shield to throw over it..

Well That makes sense... I didn't even realize that Supertrapp even made something specific for the Savage....

Personally, I love my supertrapp
and it is chrome over steel as far as I know.
buffing out some scratches i've worn thru the platting.

What's the OD of a Savage header pipe? 2.5" perhaps?

Title: Re: Muffler replacement
Post by built2last66 on 01/06/12 at 20:41:52

I'll go measure it for you brb

Edit: 1 3/4" is what I got for the slip on part..

it's about 2" but nothing mounts to that.
where a slip will go, it's a little less then 1 3/4"
typically we use 1 3/4 harley pipes with a shim.

Thanks guys. I ordered the Ryca adapter and the Emgo shorty... I'm sick of a quiet bike. I wonder if I could mount the exhaust without the adapter, since I don't have rear sets yet. That would cut the price down drastically. But I'd have to let them know to take it off the order.
