Title: Squeaky belt Post by J2 on 12/27/11 at 15:12:13 Just went through posts back to October. I know somebody said they waxed the drive belt to make it stop squeaking. I gotta wise ass neighbor who rides a Hurley. He keeps asking what's wrong with my S40. Sounds like I ran over a rat. Its the belt ... I think. First, what do I wax ... the side of the belt ... the teeth ... the whole thing? Second, what kind of wax? And finally, what's this about grinding off some part of the teeth? That sounds like you might solve the squeak and weaken the belt. In search of a more melodius thump ... J2 |

Title: Re: Squeaky belt Post by verslagen1 on 12/27/11 at 17:37:37 1st make sure your belt is centered on the pulley. all of the squeaky belt I've seen have been fixed by aligning the belt. jack the back end up off the ground. put in neutral and rotate the wheel by hand. watch the belt, does it rub on 1 side? loosen the axle nut and the lock nuts on the adjusters tighten the side the belt runs to. now spin the wheel in the opposite direction and check the belt again. check the tightness of the belt, should be able to twist the bottom about 90°. |

Title: Re: Squeaky belt Post by verslagen1 on 12/27/11 at 17:40:50 if that don't work for you, then it's rubbing on the front pulley. could be from having the spacers on backwards on the wheel. but you may have to resort to "lubing" the belt or grinding the teeth a bit when you grind it, you don't grind on the main part of the belt, just the teeth, no strength in the teeth. |

But mine has never lasted more than a 1/2 mile down the road. So I've never done anything to it,...doesn't bother at all. But then, I don't have none of them thar Harley riders to deal w/ either ! |

Usually, the belt only squeaks when I've hit a temperature change. I aligned the belt pretty well when I got new tires and that took care of most of it. It's a way bigger belt than any harley I've ever seen so I think there's a lot more surface area to cause squeaks |

Title: Re: Squeaky belt Post by Oldfeller on 12/28/11 at 15:29:42 +1 on grinding the sides of the belt, only on the side of the teeth, at a low angle of 5-7o so the edge of the teeth don't rub on the pulley washers any more, making that durn squeak sound. It is permanent, it requires no maintenance and it only squeaks when you run some in the rain and are drying out from that. |

My tread mill requires silicone spray to lube its big rubber belt. As for the other solutions, as in waxing or grinding, I appreciate alternatives. I do believe I need to check the rear wheel alignment, as was suggested. I do not have any way to jack up the bike, so I will probably have to have the dealer do it (sigh). I can do simple things, but I am not much of a wrench head. Ergo, I don't have tools, like a bike lift. In my old Honda days (CB 100, 350) I was able to set my own valve clearances! I bought this bike used, with 1200 miles on it. Some lady had owned it, and, as it is with all used vehicles, I have no idea what she may have done to it. It does run well, but the tranny locks up a bit occasionally. In those instances, I let the clutch out slowly until I hear the transmission CLACK. Then I can use the shifter again. This could simply be a characteristic of a machine designed in the 1970's. The battery apparently ran completely dry, and I cannot tell how much fluid is in it because the battery sight glass is opaque ... not clear enough to see a fluid level. Dealer checked out the charging and put in a new battery ... like they should have done before they sold it to me. Got to change the oil today (every 1500 miles). I use Rotella, as recommended on this forum, but let's don't get into that discussion again! Thanks to all. J2 |

I built this for my Marauders, but it works just fine on Aida's Savage. http://www.migcruisers.com/projects/stand/index.html Not that instead of the 2x4, I just drilled a 1 inch hole, and use 4 feet of 1 inch pipe as a lever. |
