I finally installed the head on my motor and found that I cannot get my cam timing perfect so I made an assumption. I should set the cam at retard rather than advance due to the following assumptions.

1. chain guide is slightly worn
2. slight resurfacing of the cylinder deck
3. cam chain is slightly worn and stretched

So after I reasoned this to myself I thought, "how do I adjust timing?" Is there an easy way to do this? Is it even worth the trouble?

duh, adjust the position of the pulse generator of course...right?

How much does the cam chain adjuster stick out of the housing?
18mm is cause to replace the chain and guides or install a verslavy.

Cam chain will only affect valve timing, not ignition timing... so no need to adjust it.

More to the point, there is no real "adjustment" to the system to take up for cam chain wear.

We run the chains until they plumb hit themselves in the middle and no one really notices any change in performance.

If there is one, it is mild.

If valve timing changes, why wouldn't you want to adjust ignition timing as well? btw I have the web cam and 96mm Weisco slug.

ig timing is to the piston, not the valves.

if you want to adjust the ig timing for added performance, that's acceptable.

but you don't need to do it for valve timing. I don't think even with the web cams that valve timing is aggressive enough to warrant adjusting the ig timing for a few degrees of retarded timing.

So the service manual says to adjust valve lash to 3-5 thou at room temperature (95F) What kind of room is 95F??? Its about 65F right now so I adjusted to 0.005" Should be good right? Especially if the motor is going to run a little hotter that stock with the mods...

Thats a safe start. Pay attention to it, see how long till it needs adjusted. How many miles on that engine? The tighter you can get it w/o closing the gap completely, the longer it will go between adjustments & the better valve openings youll get. Couple O thousandths is a couple of thousandths,,
