Title: Shiny bike?
Post by jellyroll on 11/27/11 at 10:12:12

I envy all of you who have shiny bikes.
Mine has discoloration on the entire exhaust system, some rust on the heat guard, and the aluminum case is oxidized in places.
I'll be honest and point out that I don't have entire weekends to put into this project. Also, I was also born with an unfortunate defect that leaves me with a lack of grease in the elbows.
What's the quickest and easiest way to polish it up?

Thanks

Just saw this posted on the latest page of the DAILY HOT TIPS...

"Hey everybody. I will use my first post here to share a tip that makes me love how my Savage shines.

To remove areas of light rust and oxidization on chrome and other shiny bits all you need is some aluminum foil and soapy water."

Ya, mine looks like an old army tank too. Once I get my front  #&*%@*!!+"*&%#  flat tire fixed, and spend the winter reinforcing the JB Weld patch on the motor, I'm gonna invest some time with aluminum foil and soapy water myself. Does that work on chrome too? (My exhaust looks like sh!t)

:o

The foil will take off a lot of crap, but it will not finish the shine on the pipes.  However, it is a nice way to start before some polish in the drill...  It knocks the top off the rust, and fills the pits with something shinny.  Makes a difference, but does not finish the job.

Oven cleaner work well to clean parts, especially chrome.  A polisher I took some stuff too leaked that trick.
