Title: "Metallic" noise
Post by Blvd1960 on 11/14/11 at 11:39:47

I have a 2008 S40 w/7900 miles; last week after an 80 mile highway ride I noticed a new noise coming from the back when riding at low speed (25 to 35 mph) when shifting on second or third shift.
I checked both front and back drive belt pulleys and neither are loose, also checked belt covers, muffler supports, etc. and could'nt find anything loose or rubbing when moving.
I have the stock muffler and think maybe something inside the muffler is creating that noise, but I think there are too few miles on it to start corroding inside.
It sounds kind of like thin metal pieces vibrating or scratching.
Have you had experience on how long stock muffler could last? or with this kind of noise at low speeds?
Thank you!

If you can't find anything check your cam chain.

OK, I checked the noise video on youtube and chain knocking is different from what I get. Anyway I will check on my camchain to rule it out.
Thanks, V1!

The big question,... running or rolling?...  running, check camchain..
... only when rolling, look for somethin' loose...

Check to see if there is clearance between the front of your belt cover & the front drive pulley cover. There is supposed to be a little pad between them & on mine when it fell out it would vibrate at certain rpms & sound like it was about to come apart. 8-)

I had some metalic noise in the rear at one time---the licence plate +/or holder was vibrating and rattling. I also had a rattle where I had to shove some rubber gas line pieces in between rear fender and those chrome side covers. Also, the reflector piece inside the rear blinkers was rattling. I took off amber lens and had to bend the tabs where the screws go through to tighten them up again. Sometimes it's a matter of search and destroy. Good luck.

The noise happens only when accelerating on 2nd or 3rd shift; when I apply clutch the noise stops.
When I took apart the front drive pulley cover I did'nt see any padding. Anyway I'm going to check all your tips.
Thanks for your help!

Re-torque the drive nut
don't just check to see if it's tight.

You can chase the thing when it is small and vague until you frustrate yourself to death ....

Or, you can simply ride the bike until the noise gets a little louder and the source becomes apparent.

The noise does not seem to have much chance of being a serious item, so simply ride it and keep an eye on the pieces that have been mentioned.

read this for muffler noises -- there are a few we call "the atomic cricket"
(the only sort of cricket that can live inside a hot muffler).

I have what could be a similar noise coming from the rear,.... not loud, nor does it concern me much.
It quit for a while after I replaced the rear tire, but slowly came back. It resembles belt noise, and even tho belt is tracking perfectly, I still think it is.

Wipe some canning wax on the belt.

Go get a pencil & some paper, make a note to get canning wax, its at the gro. store, Stick the note in your helmet. Next time you go for a ride, go to the store..

And a little more youth wouldn't hurt anything either !

To test to see if the noise is from the belt,.. you can put just about anything on it...  Oil, chain wax, baby powder, boogers,...  Then listen to see if the noise changes...
... but anything you put on it, to fix the noise, will only fix it 'till it wears off...

To stop the noise,... the only way I could do it, was to bevel the belt sides with an angle grinder....
Grrr!....  ;D...    It works though...

+1 on the bevel grinder

Just grind the teeth tips and stop grinding when you get to the base of the tooth -- degree should be a shallow 5-7 degree angle.

Once you do this, there is only an occasional post rain squeak out of the modded belt.

OK, I cehcked the thread on drive pulley coming apart!
I think it's a 30 mm wrench and the torque needed is 73.7 to 95.8 ft-lbs.
Have to borrow some tools, though.
Thanks, V1

Thank you all for the input, now I have a good list of possible noise sources for my saturday morning project. 8-)
I'll be back with my findings...

You could drain the oil & run a magnet thru it & see if youre getting metal shavings.

Update on the hunt for the new noise:

I took the drive pulley cover and checked for signs of rubbing or touching the belt cover, did not find anything but anyway placed strips of duct tape on the overlap places.

Couldn't get a 32 mm socket so I took the bike to the shop that services my wife's Mazda and torqued the nut with a pneumatic impact; it only tightened about 1/8" so he bent the washer again. On the ride back home didn't notice changes on the noise.

Checked license plate holder and tried to tighten but everything was OK, noticed that the bottom of the plate sometimes rubs the tire (I have to lose some weight!) I'll check on how to adjust shock absorbers. Also checked blinkers and fender side covers, all is well there.

Checked on muffler noise when accelerating (on neutral) and at different rpm's couldn't find a difference to tell that is damaged.

Tried to check tightness of drive belt by turning the bottom to 90 deg. with my fingers, and didn't get to 90. Did spray some water on the belt and went for a test ride and noticed much of the noise quieted! I will look on the different tips on belt dressings (wax, etc.) Now I think most of the noises are belt related.

I still have to check the alignment of the rear wheel and more into the tightness of the belt. Anyway, as Oldfeller says, it doesn't seem to be a serious problem so I'll keep on riding!

Sorry for the long post, but since I got so many good tips to check I wanted to make sure I got all covered. (Never before had a belt driven MC)

Thank you all for your help!!!
