Gots a story to tell you .....

Despite my better sense shouting "NO !! Don't do it" I tried to fix my Win XP installation on my old white box computer.

Now I am not a computer newbie, I have had Microsoft boxes since they came out with DOS 2.0 and I have reloaded and fixed and scrubbed and recovered and defragged since back when the terms were even invented.

At one time I actually ran a computer repair/refurb company called DOS Compatibles whose bread and butter was slapping 386sx clone motherboards into existing cases for businesses who could get some dollars for "repairwork" but could not get Finance to release a penny to replace an outdated (but still working) PC.

So I "repaired" dozens and dozens of them ..... ;)

Anyhow, I ain't a newbie. I knew it was gonna be fun, but I did it anyway (against my better judgement as my Linux was working fine).

First, the drive D recovery partition wouldn't come up when you F10'd at boot. This sorta told me the worm had bitten deep deep into the Microsoft installation and had done its worst. It had gotten to all the partitions and drives ...

So I went and got my stone cold legal boxed CD copy of XP and tried to boot from it -- and the darn thing wouldn't read. Not on any machine I own -- the CD disk was bad.

Leave it to Bile to put an hidden age limit on his operating systems disks to make sure you HAVE buy his new windows 7 or 8 or whatever -- Bile SUX, have I ever mentioned that? I paid over a hundred dollars for that darn disk, and it doesn't work !!!!

I'm pissed now -- I start going to IT sites and hitting the search functions. There has to be a dos command line means of cranking the drive D recovery partition up completely apart from Windows which ain't gonna be a working otherwise. I have me a bootable DOS CD.

So, I got HP's recovery disk drive:d to crank and I dumped back all the obsolete shitware they put on the machine when it was new. I say shitware because there was a lot of it and the XP was the old Media pack system back then too.

It was a big pile of outdated crapware.

I spent 6 hours trimming crap and then updating XP back to a decent level of service pack level 2 (which won't run sp3 -- now explain that one to me, Bile). Virus protected, scraped, cleaned, dollied up, defragged, compacted, printer drivers loaded, Office 97 loaded and ready to go again.

I'm done, it works and I already miss my Linux because XP is soooo slow to load stuff and do even simple things.

OK, I keep saying Linux is better, so I'm gonna get it back and jest see what it takes to do that time-wise compared to putting Bile's stuff back into running shape (6 hours of deleting, scraping and tuning).

Start

15 minutes -- Go on line and look for "Recover Mint from a Windows re installation". Find that "Boot Repair Disk" exists and where to download the ISO for it.

15 minutes -- Download ISO and burn it to a CD

5 minutes -- Cold boot to the CD which analyses my old white box, tells me my Linux partitions are still there and workable and gives me a one click choice to make (which one do you want to boot first? Windows or Mint?)

Reboot the machine, Grub2 comes up and gives me my choices and everything works again.

Mind you, I could have completely reinstalled Mint in less than the 35 minutes I spent, but you see I got back my full Linux Mint installation with all the games set up, tuned & working and all my customizations for this and that INTACT which was worth the 35 minutes I spent.

6 hours fighting with Bile's stuff or 35 minutes to put your Linux back the way it was .... now what stuff works better again?

Now here's the kicker -- Windows is gonna get crapped up again within the next year or so by some new virus/worm/trojan/rootkit and I will get more and more reluctant to try to fix it ever again because more and more it simply isn't worth it .....

And I will be darn if I pay Bile another penny for any more of his hundred dollar OS CD's that don't work when you need them to.

Reactos/Wine/Crossover ---- baby, here I come ....

Oldfeller I know you're hellbent on single handedly destroying MS, but please don't forget how "Nazi" like Apple products are.. they have blocked deals with Adobe flash for their iphones, made un-upgradable devices (so you have to buy a whole new computer/iphone/ipod, and propriatized their itunes music store to only play on Apple products, heavy handed their apps market, and don't allow open source for any of it... and Steve Jobs was a real Job by not paying out the very people that helped him design the first prototypes in his garage.. Steve was also fired from his own company...

But I do agree with you, Microsoft is a business and want you to buy their products unlike Linux... 8-)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, I never use those bundle software recovery disks (I usually build my own desktops anyway).. what I do with a premade computer is load up whichever version of windows I need or want, then go back to the manufacturers website and download any proprietary nuts I need... I toss their discs in the trash when I get em :D

This is why WinTel is so great for hobbyists - there's ALWAYS something to do. I'm typing this on an iPad. My 2001 iMac sits quietly behind me; it's old, it's slow - and it works, having received technician attention just once in it's lifetime. Oh, and Adobe/Flash just admitted Steve was right...

I hope I didn't just make a bunch of enemies, but I really feel that for people who aren't skilled technicians, who just want to USE their computers, Mac is the friendly, R E L I A B L E answer. And, what's a virus?

Got virus and spy ware,Go to Microsoft and get (Microsoft Security Essentials) Its free and works better than the one I bought.

The only virus I've ever gotten wasn't from the OS I was using but because I clicked on a file I knew better than to click...

"i" anythings are still UN-upgradeble garbage, terrible to use, Apple controls their products like Nazis and put their customers in concentration camps.. you buy an "i" anything you're buying into the idea that you're sleek and hip.. I will give them credit where credit is due, the actual hardware is well made... but a jog wheel on a mp3 player? LOL

I remember when Droid phones first came out.. Droid was slappin the Iphone around left and right even the iPhone fanboys could only come up with "well, the iPhone is prettier" in their reviews... I really feel bad for Apple fanboys... poor Steve Jobs.. iDied :-X

And yes I know Bill "stole" "borrowed" or "innovated" the who computer GUI from Steve, who prolly stole it from someone else.. I'm not a Windows advocate either, I just use it cause I'm to lazy to become a holier than thou Linux user :D

I don't know what you guys are doing to your PCs out there, but I don't have any problems..

If you hate me for the facts, then that's your problem ;D

P.S. I have Android phone ;)

How about this then ..... lets count up the money we have sent to Bile over the years. He has always wanted $80 for a legal copy of his simpler OS products and he has always wanted $200 for his Microsoft Office product. You paid at least $50 for each PC you bought (hidden OS cost in the price). So let's go with the lowest cost possible -- $50 for each PC and $150 for each Office upgrade you had to buy because everybody else did (and you couldn't open their stinkin' files .....)

Between raising a daughter and keeping a wife in functioning technology I have bought 10 PCs or laptops over the years. I have bought 2 boxed legal copies of OS's on top of that (had to have them ready for whenever I had to have them -- kid in college and all that). Wife has required 3 Microsoft Office upgrades so far .... and that last one was a real ouch lemme tell ya.

That's near a thousand dollars just for Bile's stuff -- now add in the stuff he didn't sell you like anti-virus subscriptions, Go Back, PC Tools, Symantec Gold, Nero Burn, Ghost, etc etc etc.

Thousands and thousands of dollars over the years .... (all obsolete now)

Now, ask me again which stuff WORKS better?

Linux stuff

Apple stuff (so I hear from my daughter, anyway)

Which stuff is always completely backwards compatible and the old and the new get along just fine together? (ie can always read the older files)

..... that thins the herd a bunch -- just Linux

Apple is the world's worse for dropping file support for their old platforms every 4-5 years completely and Bile has gotten so he only will open files from 2 revs back, no more.

Heck, his newer OS products won't even use software written prior to Vista and THEY SAY WIN 8 ISN'T GOING TO BE BACK COMPATIBLE FOR MUCH OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN WIN 7 ....

Jump off the upgrade merry go round and get something that works good with what you got now ....

While you were watching the funny words a HUGE audio file was sucked down and told to run to completion, all of which is considered legal and proper use of windows and browser commands -- it ain't even a virus or a malware, just Bile's good 'ol stuff in action.

This file is judged You Tube legal and still remains there today for you to look at .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to .... and listen to ....

Windows is backwards compatible. I don't blame John Deer for faulty equipment because I drive my lawnmower into a tree. Most people using computers should take a class first since it seems to be freakin hard to use one.

Once Windows is knoced off the top tier, you're gonna see a bazillion Linux/Apple problems as far as virus and crap... that kinda stuff is gonna plague computers for all eternity...

Bill has my vote over Steve... and he's more successfull in the PC department for a reason... just like andriod (linux) is crushing the iphone...

Yes, .doc files are backwards compatible (for a while yet, see what happens in 2014 when MS drops support for that entire generation of products).

HTML files are the new MS standard, and Bile will wean you way from .doc as soon as he possibly can.

Something that is amazing to me is that we still DO the same things with all of this 10x stronger better hardware that we did with the lowly 386sz generation of hardware (nothing has really gotten more complicated than the menu bars themselves once we got into the internet age).

If you want to see the new and exciting, it lives with Apple and Android now and Bile is playing catch up and he will just "Borg" the technology everywhere he can. And no, he has never innovated much of anything -- applied his proprietary standards to somebody else's ideas and let his Borg lawyers claim legal rights to "windows" of all things .....

Xerox Labs invented both windows and the mouse back in the early 1970's but failed to make a successful product line using both ideas. DEC (and HP and IBM) all implemented X windows in Unix a long time ago on their mainframes (and used an early kludgy mouse too) .... prior to Apple Macintosh or DOS even existing.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were bit player suppliers working out of their garages to help pay for college for goodness sakes.

I can remember the mainframe computers in their chill rooms. IBM (DEC) and Hewlett Packard were the big players back then.

I can remember scheduling processing time and preparing the punch cards in advance (my college era).

It has been a long slow ride to my current situation, as I look back at it.

Unix became Apple OS and Linux (Android is Linux, BTW)

DOS became Windows

Bill Gates stuff wasn't even main branch stuff, it was just a little jerk off system to run the floppy drives that IBM incensed quick and dirty style just so it could sell some little "personal computers" to compete with Commodore and Altra and (heaven help us) Radio Shack.

And yes, I can remember a Wang Word Processor before that, the desk sized affair that replaced a whole herd of typewriter wielding secretaries with their carbon paper forms. We had a secretary to run it ....

Hells bells, I learned to type on a mechanical type writer ....

Have you puppies ever even touched a mechanical type writer?

Or a mechanical adding machine?

..... cogs and gears and long stroke levers with little letters and numbers on them .....

The service man came by every 2 weeks to clean and lubricate them ....

Back in the era when you had to change out the vaccum tubes in your black & white TV periodically when they went bad on you ....

Remember then, back before the solid state transistor?

The Tegra 4 Wayne chip (Batman) that comes out in 2013 will have 20 times the processing power of the Cray 2 super computer and will be able to run anybody's software and even run Direct X 11 for games. This is a cell phone chip that is as powerful as the existing Intel chipsets.

The Brits are running scared as their existing pool of technology people are getting old and there is nobody to replace them ....

This is a fully functional computer that is as powerful as my old white box sitting next to my feet right now ... $35 -- taking orders now for delivery in December - January. This is real. This is now.

Windows was not built with security in mind. At all... When Xerox invented the mouse and the GUI they also had Ethernet... But DOS was DiskOperatingSystem as almost no one had networks then. And Windows did not do networking at all until "Windows for Workgroups." Security was a total afterthought, tacked on like cardboard and corrugated tin.

Unix, on the other hand, was multi user, and networked from the start. So, even when Linux gets popular, it will never be as bad as windows, since there is a secure design in place, not a mess of patches. (No matter what you think of the kernel source code... :) )

Houston this I know, but still Windows isn't the problem.. its usually the person using it (not knowing how to operate it or watch for malicious content, and MOSTLY the people writing malicious code).

Blame is a whole different discussion, and in that Microsoft still doesn't come out clean. ;D But with all other things being equal, including similar numbers of attackers, Linux still has a significant security advantage, as security has been there from the onset. In Windows, everything was tacked on as a late and panic induced add on. Like the Internet, for example.

With Windows 7, Bile actually had a fairly cohesive set of security functions that didn't bug the shite out of you, but he still had 65% of the PCs in the world still running XP.

Since he never offered the XP people a decent upgrade deal, they didn't upgrade. Plus, their systems really weren't strong enough to run Win 7 at any decent speed.

Linux runs really good on old systems, it ZIPS on my old white box (a good bit faster than the XP that came on it does).

Windows 8 is supposed to be able to run on a tablet -- we shall see if it does or if it limps along due to gross system BLOAT (another Microsoft innovation).

Microsoft is finally getting in the tablet game -- and back into the phone game (for the 3rd time no less). It has some major competition from Apple and Android, both of which are Unix derivatives that are inherently LAN/internet/multiuser/secure from their get go.

More code and software programs have been written in the last 4 years for Apple IOS and for Android tablets and phones than were ever written for PCs in the past 10 years. And some of it is pretty durn clever stuff, taking advantage of the new ARM chipsets with their decent inherent graphics capabilities.

Now, you give this sort of capability to the folks who are building phone/tablet games and suddenly your phone gets some pretty compelling games for you to play wherever you are.

They are building modern first person shooters now for tablets and phones, and the race/wave rider games are getting pretty extreme now.

There is a lot of growth and change going on -- in the phone space more than in the PC space. Before long you will be able to side load and play a console game on your phone (and there are LOTS of those that folks remember and love).
