Title: Must see destination suggestions...
Post by Konstable on 11/11/11 at 20:13:59

Good day all.

I'm still putting together some ideas for a major cross country tour I'll be doing in about 2 years or so. I'll be moving from AZ back to NY, and I'm plotting a path for my ride.

I'm looking for suggestions of "must see" stops so I can get as many awesome photo ops as possible.  Right now, I'm not thinking so much about scenery or vistas per se, after all, there's plenty of beauty abound ( bless the USA).

Right now, I have 2 must see stops;  Carhenge, and Mt. Rushmore & Crazy Horse monument.  But between AZ, those 2 sites and NY, there's a whole lotta USA and I want to experience the most (preferably low cost) spectacular sites that can be toured via an LS 650.

So, ladies and gentlemen of ss.com; name a few places worth seeing.

As for the itinerary, it's pretty flexible, so if my path takes me zig-zagging north/south east/ west all about the country, well, that's the point.  The only restriction is I will avoid the state of New Mexico ( for personal reasons).

I rode my Savage to Mt. Rushmore. Kinda disappointed in the monument. Thought it would be much bigger. The ride tho is great!  The Black Hills is beautiful!  I also liked riding thru the Badlands in SD. Check out Sturgis while there.

The Mississippi river road. Runs up and down the river from somewhere in Wisconsin, south through Iowa and so on. Scenic with some twisties and hills. Come up from the south, to the Wisconsin river, and then cut over to Madison, (state Capitol), and check out the Capitol building grand rotundra. If you time it right, (late August-early July), you can then go east to Milwaukee and check out Miller Park, where the Milwaukee Brewers play, then on to the art museum on Lake Michigan, right next to the Summerfest grounds. Midwest's largest summer music festival. Good times. If you have 3 hours left, then go north to Green Bay and see the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Feild, home of the defending Super Bowl Champion Packers. They have a tour where you see inside the playing field, and they have the Packers hall of fame. See the 4 Super Bowl trophies. Then cruise up into Door County, (the finger of Wisconsin) Lots of old world stuff to see, and very scenic. Or, head south to Chicago to see the Sears tower. A paid tour to the viewing deck on top is well worth the time and money. While in Wisconsin, stop and enjoy a delicious Culvers double cheeseburger.

Garden of the gods in Colorado Springs.  Along rt 66, you do get Santa Fe, which is very nice in itself.  Also Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadillac_Ranch (Go to Big Texas for steak)  And the Lake of the Ozarks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_of_the_ozarks

If you can get down to South Texas, a ride on the Three Sisters is amazing! http://www.hillcountrycruising.com/the3s.html http://www.motorcycleroads.com/75/555/Texas/The-Three-Sisters-%28AKA-The-Twisted-Sisters%29--Ranch-Roads-335-336337a.html  Of the few people I know who have rode both the sisters and the Dragon, the answer of which is better is, "Hmmm...  Thats tough..."  A biker friendly place for that ride is http://www.koyoteranch.com/

The Black Hills are indeed some great scenery. Carhenge is cool too, used to drive by it every couple weeks going to and from college.

If ya get to the Northwest area, I recommend the Columbia River Gorge, either Oregon or Washington sides. 8-)

I agree there too. I have been to Estes Park several times on vacation. Ride the tram up the mountain. Awesome. Going East through Big Thompson canyon would be a rush on a bike. The Royal Gorge Bridge, down by the Military base there, is a sight to see. Highest suspension bridge in the USA, I believe. Further east you got the black hills, the badlands, Sturgis, mount Rushmore, Crazyhorse. Plenty to see. Nebraska and Iowa are pretty boring, (miles and miles and miles of nothing but corn), but don't forget Wisconsin. The northern 1/2 of the state is very scenic. Nicolet National Forest. Door county. (Egg Harbor fish boil. yumyum)  Awesome.

You guys remember back in the 60's, headin down the road & seeing p/u trucks with camper shells & decals from different states & parks & other "Must see" locations"? & Id see little trailers will all kinds of stickers on them, too.. America was something else back then,, people, just regular working people, had $$ , $$ to go places, take time off & travel the country,, OHH, but then we got the CIA operatives to misguide the women,, thats another story,,
