Title: "Pop" start fail
Post by Bubba on 10/31/11 at 07:53:45

Maybe I'm doing something altogether stupid but I wanted to test out pop starting my bike just in case I ever need to. I've popped cars a lot (used to have a VW bug that I parked on a hill cuz the starter was bad and I was broke) and I would think the procedure is the same but maybe I'm missing something.
Went to a parking garage to try, here's what I did:

Put the bike in third
turned ignition key to "on"
set the ignition switch to "on"
started rolling down the ramp to about 15 mph
popped the clutch...nothing
popped the clutch again...nothing

what am I doing wrong?  :-[

What does 'nothing' mean?

lock tire up skiding to a stop?

engine turning but no joy?

lock tire up skiding to a stop is the most common answer.
You have to do 1 of 2 things to get the tire rolling.
1. make sure the piston is on the exhast stroke.
How the f@#k do I do that you say?
pretty darn simple, put it in the big gear and bump it forward till you can easily lift up on the decomp lever.  Now you are on the exhaust stroke.
2. push the start button right before you release the clutch.
You need to use a little juice on this one, so the battery will need to recover before it'll start.  So it will chug a couple of times before you get fire.

Now I select 1st, most will say 2nd or 3rd.  #2 is why I select 1st cause it will easily chug along in 1st till it fires so you don't have pull in the clutch with any precision to keep it from lugging.

Nope no tire skidding, no fire at all. It didn't even sound like it wanted to light the fire...just pretty much kept rolling along.
I didn't hit the start button though, I just figured letting the clutch go would turn it over.
I'll try giving it a shot in first or second and see what I get.
Thanks!

May have been turning to slow to fire, try lower gear as you said.

2nd gear and hit the start just before you pop the clutch

Get a decent battery in it,

How cant it keep rolling along in 3rd if the clutch is not engaged? Should be harder to push than neutral.

update
Did this to make sure I could do it when needed (not out of neccessity).
Tried in second gear and definately used a little more speed. Worked fine even w/o hitting the starter button.
hopefully when I find the need to do this I'll be at the top of a big hill instead of at the bottom...
