I was changing my oil today and noticed a noise near the starter besides the engine..sounds like knocking but it's not from the engine. any clue what it is?

I might be a little hard of hearing, but I didn't hear anything out of place  :-/

But I do have a question for you, did you swap the bars/grips/controls? If so, how tall are they and where did you get your cables?

Could be a few things
...could be the cam chain
...could be a real bad valve adjustment
and a few more.

check on the other side, feel by the top left oil filter cover on the clutch cover... feel a tappin'?  That's a gremlin tryin' to get out, you better stop and let him out.

If you don't feel it then adjust your valves.

and I'd check to see if you got a header leak too.

Yes sir. Kuryukin grips, magnum extension cables and custom risers and bars. 17" total.

Don't feed the Mogwai (Verslagen1) after midnight and you won't have gremlins tryin to get out...

yes
so adjust your valves and hope it goes away
you're pretty early for a cam chain.
