its been a while since ive been on hee but i finally got some money to get my savage project back on the road. im replacing some parts in the motor and the tensioner was one of them. i bought a new one not even thinking the actual chain could be stretched. when i put it back together the  tensioner comes right out just like the old one did. dos this mean my chain is somehow stretched? or did i replace something wrong im 75% sure i put it back in right

Common mistake, the chain stretches, the tensioner doesn't shrink.

2 ways to fix this, new chain or verslavy it.

Yup,.. it's the chain that stretches...

If I were you,... since you bought  a new one,.. I'd send the old one to Verslagen to get it pinned and extended...
Then,... when you get it back, you could install it on the second hole and get 25k more miles out of your chain, and never have to worry about the extender falling out...

Maybe Versy would be interested in taking the other one in some kind of trade?...  ...or not... I don't know..
.. but the mod is well worth it... ;)...

Yeah, the plunger on the stock tensioner falls out of the piston part of the tensioner if the chain stretches too much. Welcome to the world of budget bikes.

thanks for the help guys i have 2 more questions. the nut on the gear in front of the cam chain gear; is that a right or left handed thread? and same question about the nut on the pulley... and with out the pulley tool(that holds it in place so you can remove the nut) what do you use to hold it? any tricks? the motor is out of the frame so i can not just put it in gear and use the tire to stop it. thanks

Lefty's...

1.  Primary drive gear nut (LH)...

2.  Timing bolt on the rotor (LH)...

3.  Shifter rod at the shifter end (LH)...

... and that's it!...

Wedge something between the pulley and the case,... I think I used a leather belt once...
...just don't bust the case... ;D...

Just out of curiosity, approx how many miles can one expect to attain from a stock cam chain w the versy mod ?

50% more the you get from the stock one... approx 25k more... on average would be my guess...
It's very variable depending how you ride and maintain your bike...

... the chain should stretch to the space available now,... rather than to the limit of the adjusters extension...

I expect a more definitive audible warning than from the stock one... which can be more catastrophic...

chain life expectancy varies wildy. I was in the market for a verslvy at 9k miles and had a new chain in by 20k although i couldve waited. After a fair amount of performance mods my brand new chain was ready for the second hole at a little over 6k mi, but that of course being due to my more enthusiastic riding. With  fully stock machine I would check it a 10k mi.
