Title: 4_Speed_Trans Post by mojo on 10/19/11 at 21:27:49 Saw a 2003 Savage advertised with a 4-speed gearbox. What year did Suzuki go from 4 to 5 speed? Should a person avoid buying one with a 4-speed? http://www.cycleclassifieds.us/c/1277/Suzuki/3.html |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by verslagen1 on 10/19/11 at 21:30:46 means the engine was replaced with an older model. '95 was the 1st 5speed only 1 issue that I know of, starter kickback. but that's a problem solved. just install a stator cover and anti kickback gear from a late model. biggest issue in my mind you'll never know the true miles on the engine. looked at ad... most likely mislabeled, it has a late model jug and head. |

Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by sillydilly on 10/20/11 at 11:05:48 I get lots of problems with starter kickback on my 4spd |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by drums1 on 10/20/11 at 11:31:05 I have never noticed any starter kickback on my '87. Unless it's doing it and I just am not realizing it. What does it sound like and when does it do it? |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by SurfJunkie on 10/20/11 at 11:38:14 Sounds like a nice metal "TWANG" during shutdown. I for one friggin hate my 4 speed. Trying to determine if its worth it for me to split the cases and swap to a 5, or maybe purchase a used good condition 5 speed motor and swap it.... Whats the going rate of a good running condition 5 speed motor ? |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by verslagen1 on 10/20/11 at 12:03:46 Unless someones installed the anti kick back gear for you, shouldn't sound like anything. But it could sound worse... CRACK! 5spd should be doing the twang. |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by drums1 on 10/20/11 at 12:18:54 Hmmm mine makes lots of funny noises on startup, while running and on shutdown. Always has, so I never thought twice about it. Since the rock incedent, I'm just gonna ride it 'till it explodes. Then, I'll know for sure that I need a new motor. :o |
Title: Re: 4_Speed_Trans Post by RidgeRunner13 on 10/20/11 at 12:57:47 I bought an '87 back in '88, I've had a 2000 & still have a 2001. IMO, the 4 speed has a better gear spread. The 5 speeds actually have a slightly lower high gear. The extra gear was more of a sales tool than an improvement. :o From my SSM, purchased 12/95. 87-88: Primary reduction ratio - 1.888 (68/36) Final reduction ratio- 2.956 (68/23) 1st. - 2.214 (31/34) 2nd.- 1.500 (27/18) 3rd.- 1.095 (23/21) 4th.- 0.875 (21/24) 95-? Don't think it's changed but that's as far as my manual goes. Primary reduction gear -1.810 (67/37) Final reduction ratio- 2.956 (68/23) 1st. - 2.333 (35/15) 2nd.- 1.578 (30/19) 3rd- 1.142 (24/21) 4th.- 0.956 (22/23) 5th.- 0.884 (23/26) I just don't think it's worth it...the motor has enough torque it doesn't need it. With better jetting & a higher final ratio, in stock form the old Savages were faster on top end. :o |
