Title: Does the savage need a bettery to run.

As the title says, does the savage need a battery to run ! IE if i have started it with my car bat and theres no battery on the bike, will it die when i discconect the wires to the car battery ?

yes

The Savage must have a battery in circuit and it must be supplying at least 10 volts under load or the black box won't fire the plug.

What makes this odd is that the bike will turn over the electric starter (slowly) at as low as 9 volts, but there's nothing happening at the sparky plug end -- becomes a real puzzlement to some newpersons sometimes.

It also becomes a real drag when your battery gets poorly and you partially charge it jest long enough to get it to crank up for a run to the grocery store to get some milk (ya got 11 volts in there temporarily) then it will crank but not fire the plug when you get out with the milk to go home.

Lots of short runs don't do very much to charge a "in poor shape" battery.

;D  Not only do you need a battery, but it must be in GOOD SHAPE to run the bike properly.

I can vouch for that, I was puzzled when mine had a bad cell but still would start the bike from time to time.

Im afraid it has stoped charging :/
The battery is totaly dead, so I used the car bat to start it, when i removed the jump cables the savage died !
Back with the cables and start it again ! Read the volts when running. I fackt the voltage drops when i rev the engine... does that mean that the power consumption increases because it does not charge.
When i remove the jump cables and in that sec or two the engine still turns but not fires i does not charge !
I tryed to remove the bat and just let the jump cables deliver the charge, when i removed the jump cables it dies !

Crap !

Smells like your regulator rectifier may have just went south on you, BUT YOU WILL NOT KNOW THIS UNTIL YOU PUT A KNOWN GOOD BATTERY INTO THE BIKE FOR TESTING PURPOSES.

Get a good battery into the bike, then test it.

(You do have a volt ohm meter and know how to test your R/R output, right?   Measure resting battery voltage (12.x volts) then crank the bike and if R/R is working you should see 13.x volts to 14.x volts across the battery terminals with the engine running if your R/R is operating in normal parameters)

Once you know you have a bad R/R go to ebay and get yourself a replacement

Yea, dont jump to conclusion, my bad battery was doing the same, voltage dropped when revving. Take your battery to autozone and have the cells tested.

Thanks for reply ! It was with the car battery it dropped when i reved ! and im quite sure that battery is ok !

Somehow mine can idle with battery disconnected. Touch the gas and it dies. Wicked!!  ;D

Tiny spark is enough for gas at idle but cant keep up with the demand.

batterys the first thing you should look at. when I built my bike, I had a battery charger hooked straight up to the wires. It would turn over and start no problem, but it would backfire and miss like no tomorrow. Several engine rebuilds, timing adjustments, and even a new CDI & Coil later.... it was the lack of a battery all along  :-?

Think the battery is long gone :/ Cant take a charge at all, not even enugh to make a tiny spark when shortet !

I bought a new battery and installed !
Engine off 12,5v
engine idle 13,5v
I hope its only the battery thats gone south !

But its strange, the "old" battery is only 6months old.... crappy quality !
