Title: Easy way to remove Fork Guards?
Post by built2last66 on 10/17/11 at 11:52:02

I just got a SuperBrace and it doesn't explain how to remove the original fork guards. Before I go cuttin stuff up, I'd like to know if there's an easy way to remove them and keep them intact in case I need them later. The SuperBrace guy told me to cut em off with a bone saw..  :D

How many miles are on the front fork seals?

Kimchris1 did a tech thread on how to cut them off with a utility knife without scratching the fork legs.

If you want to salvage the guards, use a small piece of wood as a punch.  Tap upward on them and work your way around.. they will come up and off in one piece.

Screw it.. I don't have a stand to even take the front wheel off.. bone saw it is... unless there's a way to pop the guards up over the seal and onto the thinner part of the fork then cut with plastic clippers... hmm

I remember seeing that thread, but couldn't find it in the tech section, could ya point me to it if you have it handy?

Once again I'm searching for "fork guard" in the tech section and it's under "fork protectors" and not under the front suspension category.. lol

Thanks for the link!

A skinny wood chisel works great, just dont go crazy with the hammer.

I cut mine with a utility knife very careful.I didn't try to save them.

Get a piece of wood (6" hunk of 2x4 will work fine) and a hammer. Use 2x4 & hammer to tap raised section of guard sideways or radially or whatever that is to loosen it. Then, working front & back, front & back, use 2x4 & hammer to push guard UP until it's entirely off the lower. Then you can cut it off with a pair of household Fiskar scissors or whatever. No lifting, no scratching, no cursing. And yer gonna love the brace.

So many ways... I think I might try using my rubber mallet instead of a piece of wood and tap that with a steel hammer.. if that doesn't work I'm just gonna try the exacto knife method, I'm better with a blade then a hammer..

Be careful w/ the X-acto, I pushed too hard once & broke a blade, the resulting Free Motion when the blade broke raked my thumb across the part that was sticking out of what I was cutting.. 4 stitches later I was headed home,.

I'll have the tip of the blade barely peekin out so I don't scratch my forks.. waitin on the freakin torque wrench to get here..

+1 It is soooo much easier and only takes a couple of minutes.

Anyone have a 2005 S40? I need to know the front axle pinch bolt torque... and I don't have the Clymers 2005+ edition available..

10 minute installation for a SuperBrace.. lol..  ::) ;D

It only took be 1/2  hr including removing the old fork guards and installing the new ones.

Is that 11 TO 18 ft lbs? If so, that's confusing.. so I can just torque it to 15 ft lbs?

SuperBrace shouldn't say 10 min installation... they didn't need to sell me on the speed and ease to install it... :D

I never use a torque wrench for something like that. If it didn't have the fork protector it would be a 10 minute job.

No it wouldn't because you still have to walk around looking for pieces of wood to prop yer bike up on to make it level  :D

How about parking the bike in the sun,  letting the guards get warm and flexible, then grabbing the tab with vise grips and yanking upward. Then cut them with utility scissors or nippers?

Watch out &* dont let anything svcrape up the fork tubes.

Yes, according to the service manual.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up cutting them off with a pointy exacto, the plastic is so soft it took me about 2 minutes for each one. I cut a groove almost to the metal, then was able to just tear/pop it off.

The SuperBrace is amazing, I'm just having trouble getting it completely down over my front fender. I'm gonna have to take the fender off tomorrow just to get it to 1/16 instead of 1/8th like the instructions say.  ;)

I suggest you put a thin piece of cardboard, like a shoebox wall, under the brace to space it away from your paint. Hitting the underside with a grinder isnt a sin.

I can't even fit a piece of paper under it to have it set at 1/16 when it's supposed to be 1/8th from the fork seal.. tomorrow I'm gonna take off the fender to correct it.. this is a 2005 S40 that I bought stock and haven't touched past the engine at all...

Mine is an 05 & I put it where I could, covered the gaps the plastic guards sat in & it rubbed a raw spot in the paint.. even after I used a grinder on the bottom of it, All I did was smooth the casting up,, I wish I had done just a bit more. I dont see the need for an 1/8th of an inch anywhere,, Just put the top on the line where the fork lowers start to taper.

Try loosening the fender mounting bolts & seeing if there is enough slop in the holes to get the clearance you need. If not, I would file the holes oblong before I would grind on the brace. 8-)

Title: Re: Easy way to remove Fork Guards?
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/18/11 at 18:47:31

Probably a better answer,, tho what I did was just removing casting that was needing cleaned up, I didnt remove anything structural

I really don't care about the paint under the fender, as long as everything is functioning right... performance > aesthetics

I really don't think messing with the fender will help set the SuperBrace 1/8th from the fork seal, but I'm gonna try just because I'm anal about going really fast but not tearing my knees off in a wreck..  :D

I didn't see any problems with it,theres only one place it can be.

I used to love the rain before I started riding... and I'm not a weekend warrior with a Harley either..

It has rained every day here for the last two weeks except for Monday, and I was too busy to ride. :(
