Title: Gas cap cleaning.. which method?
Post by built2last66 on 10/11/11 at 09:44:51

So I finally have my gas cap leak proof, now at 60+ MPH I get the "out of gas" engine cut off... I know my vacuum and petcock are good since I only got this problem once my gas cap seal was sealed air tight, so apparently the breather in my gas cap is clogged/dirty. I've been suggested cleaning it with carb cleaner, but I was also thinking of soaking it in lighter fluid (this is just a wild shot in the dark).. but I don't know exactly where the breather hole is.. so any recommendations on how to clean it would help, other wise I'm going to switch to a Raptor petcock but I need to take a few trips before it would even arrive.

Thanks

A Raptor won't help a clogged gas cap vent...  You need to fix that...

Get a spray carb cleaner, and squirt a heavy dose in every tiny opening you can find... then shake the crap out of it,... then blow it out with compressed air... (if you don't have a compressor, you can buy canned air)... shake it madly again... (PS,.. I'd like video of this, if you can... ;D)...
That'll probably work better than a soak,.. because of the spray pressure...

If it's like other caps I've seen,.. there's a BB in there that covers a tiny air hole,.. and yours is stuck...

Rotsa' ruck... ;)...

Nope I can hear that bb rollin around in there.. I thought I put it back together wrong cause of that thing... oh wells, I'll give it a carb cleaning, which kind should I get from a local store? I have an air compressor so I don't need a can of Dust Off.. well I do.. but I won't waste it on the gas cap...  ;)

... after thinking about it,... Your problem with gas cap leaking probably caused this...  but, simply sealing the cap rim won't fix it...
The reason caps leak, is that the tank is overfilled...
Sealing the rim, allows you to overfill without leaking, but the gas is still up there,.. that gas, is working it's way into the cap leaving a residue that lacquers up and clogs the vent...
Best to try to fill a little less,... and this problem won't recur... ;)...

I'd use whatever cheapest,...  "cause I'm cheap... ;D...

It was spewing out like Niagra Falls even when under an inch from the fill line in the manual.. I fill it up exactly how the manual says to, I don't over fill it, because then I can't measure the exact amount of needed Sea Foam, and I only use Pee Foam when I'm out of gas... maybe when I poo through the key hole it's getting clogged?

What kind of carb cleaner can I get from say Advance Auto that will be reusable if I do actually ever clean my carb? (I've never ever bought carb cleaner or cleaned a carb so I'm like "dur")

Another thing I just thought of.. maybe I'm tightening the screws in too tight on the bottom of the cap.. and bending something not allowing the tiny hole to breathe?

Just buy the big red can with a white label that says CARB CLEANER or CLEAN R CARB lol. If you use it alot ( takes oil stains off the garage floor if you get to it within 5-10 mins. ) get the big ass can.

Its all the same. If it says CARB CLEANER, tis good enough.

Nope,... if you don't tighten them down good,... you'll be fishin'...
It's a clogged passage... Spray away... if that don't work,.. take it apart again...

Any aerosol can of stuff labeled "carb cleaner" should do.

I prefer the above.

I cleaned it with an air compressor and some STP carb cleaner I found layin around.. so far when I take off the gas cap there's no more suction sound, but it's been raining so I haven't fired it up today at all..
