Title: You,.. and your valve stem...
Post by Serowbot on 10/10/11 at 13:17:10

Did you know,...  that nut on your valve stem should not be tightened down?...
It is there to hold the stem in place during installation, and to hold the stem when the tube is initially inflated...

Once the tire is aired up,... it should be backed off, away from the rim, to half way or more up the shaft...
This gives the tube a slight amount of wiggle and stretch when the tire is under torque during acceleration and decel...

Not kiddin',.. really!...   a lot of mechanics don't even know that...
Now you do...  ;)...

All my years of bustin' tires with tubes....I did not know that. Makes sense, though.
But, why not just take the nut all the way off?

So's you don't lose it, if you ever have to take the tire off to patch it...
Kinda' old school,.. nobody hardly patches tubes anymore... but, just in case...

PS... Yes, Bill... even new bikes come with that nut snug,... because buyers complain that it was left loose if they don't...
;D...

I thought that was for keeping the tube from spinning around in side the tire when you take off fast.

Serow, we have always left my stems as much as 1/3 rebated into the rim, and on some bikes they are double nutted to keep them that way. Bill, I used to ride dirt and had tube type rims with another hole at the opposite side of the rim from the valve stem hole. It held what we called "rim locks" to keep the big rear knobbies from slipping and pulling the stem out of the tube. A real pain at tire changing time. This is one of the things we didn't know we didn't know. It takes a lifetime of experience, and we still don't know some things.

You guys aren't wrapped tight ... nope, you're just not.

I can hardly believe you actually discuss valve stems in public and with the family like this.  Decent people just don't do these things.
REALLY  !

If you keep you valve stem lubed and a rubber cap on it you shouldn't have a problem with it.

I considered buying a set of big knobbies way back when I was young.  Thank goodness somebody talked me out of that!    8-)

Lube and Rubbers for the win!

P.S. I love this thread and all the innuendos within.
