Title: Electric motor whir?
Post by spacepirates on 10/10/11 at 09:57:11

Two new noises coming from the bike (2002 with 14k miles) this week:
1) A noticeable whir from gears when coasting with the clutch IN. It sounds similar (if not the same) to when you coast in first gear, but this just started happening in all gears.

2) What sounds like the starter spinning down on shutdown. This doesn't happen all the time, but I'd say about 2/3rds of the time I shut down, the bike seems like it stops hard and then you hear the sound of an electric motor spinning down.

So, all in all, my bike is developing quite the symphony of noises during shut down. *whir while coasting to a stop* *slight squeak of front brakes* *nice rumbling idle* *electric whir* *BAM backfire*. There are also a healthy amount of rattles in there (stupid speedo...), but i'm not much of a percussion kind of guy so i'll just leave those be.

Any idea what those two new sounds are? I'd normally dismiss them, but i don't like new sounds showing up uninvited, and despite my bike being a 2002, I don't like knowing pre '95 starters have an issue with "kick-back."

What I'm thinking is best case: I'm just paranoid (it happens...). Worst case: some wear on some gear somewhere is making things fall out of tolerance?

edit: 24k miles, not 14k

Sounds weird,... but I'd just ignore it...
At 14k you don't have any gears or whirligigs wearing out...
It may be a change in the weather... making rubber bits stiffen and creating new noises...
Then,.. once something is a little different, you start listening harder,.. and find new uh-oh's...

I do this all the time...
'till I put in my Verslavy,... every noise I heard sounded like a cam chain falling out...

Oh!... maybe you should check your cam chain...
Do you have a Verslavy in there?... :-?...

1. have you checked your cam chain adjuster?
2. are you sure your starter shuts off when you stop pushing the button?
3. Is the gear whine all the time now?

You can check the starter gears by pulling the starter, put your finger in the hole and turning the gear.  It should spin freely in one direction and not it the other.

Bah, should have been "24k" not "14k". My bad.

I do have a verslavy in there. put it in at 21k miles or so.

1) Maybe belt pulley

1. Not in the last 3-4k miles. It was in the second hole and not extended much at all (less than 10mm tops)
2. Nope. Guess I'll go check that this evening.
3. Most every time, yes. I'd say about 80-90% of the time, though I've been trying to avoid it just because I'm suspicious...

This I'm not sure of. It is too friggin hard to describe different noises in words to know. I'll play with the belt a bit and see if that remedies the sound.

You might also check the tightness of your front belt pulley...  Torque on it really hard,... and if it moves even a 1/10th of a turn, put a new splined washer on it....
It took me 6 months to figure that one out... :-?...

That wouldn't cause that wind-down sound at shut-off,... but it don't hurt to check...

I think his #2 sound is nothing more than the engine running backwards at shutdown and spinning the backlash gears.
Happens to me about that often.. nuthin to worry about.

Updates:
Checked the starter gears, they move freely one direction and not at all the other.
Checked the front pulley, it is tight as tight can be.
Checked the belt tension, seems just about right (just doing the 90 degree twist test)

I didn't get a chance to ride it tonight, got too busy. I'll get it out tomorrow and have a look-see. or a listen-hear. or whatever.
