Title: front end changes to match new rear shocks
Post by kuri77 on 10/09/11 at 11:33:19

Thinking about going to Prog Susp 412-4232C 11 inch shocks as mentioned in thread from 2006.  No one mentioned changing front end to match up with half inch longer shocks. Maybe too small a change to need any up front but the original geometry would not be the same.  Some in the original thread mentioned going up as high as 12.5 which necessitated kickstand change and belt cover removal.  Adding 2 inches to the rear would mandate front end changes I imagine otherwise handling would be compromised.  Any comments either way?

No need to mess with the front end,,

The ryca folks are raising the rear and lowering the front end for quicker response.

raising the rear 1" will give you a little quicker response, but I doubt that you'll be able to feel it.

vs. raising the front end will affect your pocket book greatly.

Raising the rear, and not doing anything to the front.. is actually a slight improvement in handing...
Gives you a little less chopper/rake,.. and puts a little more of the weight distribution to the light front end... both good...

The difference is small, and hardly noticeable, but if anything, positive...
Mostly, you are getting a more comfortable ride, and better rear end traction on rough surface roads...
;)...

I did recently add about 1/4" spacer to the front fork springs,... it very subtly firmed the forks. reducing some dive, and making minute squirlys in the road less noticeable...
It was booger to squish the springs back down the tube by myself though... easier if you had two people...

I cut down my stock spacers 3/8 inch  in my forks to get a smoother ride.I have the prog 11 inches shocks no problem with the different length.I weight 150#.

Thanks for the replies.  It appears that Bill67 and Serowbot did opposite things to get a similar improvement, if "smoother" and "firmer"  are synonymous.  Do both of you have stock front ends?  Anyone with any Progressive Suspension progressive springs in the front?

I doubt smoother and firmer mean the same thing. Smoother usually means softer.

Front is stock Progressive don't show any fork springs for the S40,I have progressive fork spring in my Suzuki 1500 and they are better and smoother ride.

Yes,.. we did opposite things for opposite results...

I think the stock front is way too squishy...

I also think, that's why Bill likes his Tkat so much...  his forks are so squishy that they'll wobble running over french fry...
;D...

Thanks for the replies and straightening that out also for the bummer info that PS doesn't make springs for us.

If you think your front fork is to squishy then you should put heavier fork oil in.It would slow down the action.

Ryca Motors had Progressive springs made for the forks
Check their website/store; I think they are there.

Are Ryca motors forks the stock length. I looked it up their forks are 2 inches shorter,The spring says in firms up the ride,It still might work because you can use different pre loads.Normal the spring wouldn't be firmer but wouldn't bottom out either,$80 for the springs and pre loads. Not a bad price.

Just talked to Ryca.  He said won't work unless you are lowering the bike.  He did say that unlike the web page which says
"UPGRADES (sold with kit only)
Progressive front fork springs $75
Front fork springs from Progressive Suspension® for a firmer ride."
they do sell the springs separately.
Talked to Progressive Suspension and they make special ones for Ryca but have no stock ones for us.  He said they'd put it in their "maybe to do list".

Back in the 1970's they didn't use a spacer the spring were the full length.

Why couldn't you just put in longer spacers with the Ryca springs?

I'm talking about all 1970 motorcycles not the savage at all.
