Title: Opinions needed
Post by LostArtist on 10/03/11 at 18:02:40

would you wear either this:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/mxr199/tshirt/t-shirt1.jpg

or this:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/mxr199/tshirt/t-shirt2.jpg

as a t-shirt, imagine the silhouette is of a Savage or whatever you are riding and and a better more dramatic angle.

just a rough idea right now. need to design a t-shirt for my graphic design class, this is my default idea if I don't get any more time to work on anything else.

Would depend on the quality and price. I'm cheap and expect things to last for ever. Aside from that it's not a bad looking design.

Both bird designs are cool but the 2nd one might look too much like the ford thunderbird logo.

The bike silhouette can be cleaned up to look less cut & paste, make the bottom of tires round and remove the license plate bracket.

Think of how the colors would work on a tee shirt.. are you going to have them screen the silver parts of the bike, or make them white, or leave them the background color of the shirt?  Fewer colors = cheaper of course, but limited to light shirts.

Delete "RESPECT"  The thing either commands respect or it doesn't.. the viewer doesn't need to be led by the nose to think about respect.  Kind of reminds me of girls with "HOTTIE" or "DIVA" across their shirt or ass.

Overall it is a cool design that you could sell many copies of by modifying it for particular bikes.  Once you decide on the number of colors it should be easy to figure out how many sales will recoup the cost of the shirts, ink and screens.  The savage would probably be a good one to invest in, along with a Harley v-twin and maybe a nondescript cafe racer.

Im not feelin it.. but then, I might be a bit numb

I like the second one. I would clean up the silhouette and ground the wheels on the top of the wings. I would loose the stylized scull and put the bike logo there. and make the rainbow behind the bike lighter or a different colour. (not as bright as the wings). If you do all this you will have more depth to the composition, bringing the wings to the foreground, the bike on top, and the rainbow in the background.

I'd wear the first one as a back patch on my jean jacket if you took out the rainbow and got rid of "Respect" and replaced it with something like "F*** YER HARLY"  :D

Replace the rainbow with something else though, some kind of background graphic to keep the original idea for the pic..

I think a touch of sugar skull would help too:

I agree about deleting "Respect".  Also, the center of the logo looks like the face of an owl.

Start over.

Unless he made it into a badass looking owl  ;)

starting over it is . . .   well almost

To me I like the profile of the Savage kind of laid back chopper because of the bigger front tire. In your picture it looks as if the rear tire is bigger. Otherwise I like the ensemble.
Good luck!

revision 1

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/mxr199/tshirt/T-Shirt.jpg

it's not a savage, that's why it doesn't look like one, and it's not cleaned up, it's just a placeholder image  until I get a cleaned up silhouette ready to go.  the bike is more or less interchangeable, I can do one with a savage in it if you all like this enough to go want it.  the word "respect" I'm still playing with, may or may not be there in the final design, to me it's important but if I can't get it to work with the design, then I'll take it out no problem. color is also negotiable, I like yellow so I made it this sorched yellow color to go with the trim color on my triumph bonneville logo, that's all. no big deal there.

as far as the owl/skull goes, you knew it was a skull without someone telling you so nuff said.

it is illegal to use company logos without their permission so I haven't done so.

Thank you all for your opinions, they are useful so keep them coming.

Post by weracerc on 10/05/11 at 06:33:03

I like the revision - still owl'ish looking - can you make the eyes squinty or evil looking?

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by babyhog on 10/05/11 at 06:38:25

I like that one better than the first two.  I like the un-even spikes(?) on the top side.  Bike is about the right size.  "Ride" font is good.  Maybe try the skull face black instead of white?  And maybe a triangle nose instead of diamond?  I feel like it needs some vibrant color...

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by PiaFea on 10/05/11 at 08:57:46

Too much details on the bike. Bird face to many rounded features.
Rev. is better than the first two ones.

Clean except I like the yellow sunburst in the background of the dirty one. I just don't care for the paint splotches.

Clean design looks good... can you get a Savage as the bike depicted?

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by babyhog on 10/06/11 at 07:22:46

Yep, agree with Z.  Like the background sunburst.  Neat to see the progression too.  Love it.   :)

(splotches would be more fitting for a dirt bike!)

okay, I went a little crazy and here it is. sorry

messy

if someone can send me a good profile (from the side) shot of a savage I'll do one with it as the bike.  and also make it more like the clean one or however you all want it.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by Starlifter on 10/06/11 at 09:40:10

Make the owl face an eagle or better yet a logo...maybe the bird wings could be the S40 Boulevard wings with the savage logo in the round spot.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by weracerc on 10/06/11 at 09:55:18

i like the top one just above - with the exception of the bird eyes - the nose is cool and everything else is cool - the bird eyes just dont do it for me.......would love it if the eyes were evil'ish

does this help??

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/mxr199/tshirt/tshirt-Expressive2.jpg

NO OWL!

NO LOGOS - legal reasons- most companies won't care but why risk it.

NO EAGLE - buy a harley

yes this is the mess one, if you don't like it clean it up in your own mind.  :P  I'll clean it up and repost later. like later tonight

the eyes aren't evilish for a reason, there's nothing evil about death/skulls, sick of seeing every skull have evil eyes. . .

sorry, not trying to be too confrontational but I'm in a hurry so, sorry

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by babyhog on 10/06/11 at 10:24:36

Nope, the messy one distorts the bike too much.  Not identifiable any more.  I do like the messy look on the word "Ride" though.

The clean pic in Reply #15 is still my favorite.    ;)

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by Starlifter on 10/06/11 at 10:26:05

You simply must change that goofy owl face. Put anything but that in the circle. Even this  ;) would be better.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by LostArtist on 10/06/11 at 10:26:43

fyi, I hate the teeth . . .

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by LostArtist on 10/06/11 at 10:36:57

well I"m not going to be able to please you all so . . .

is there any concensus among anyone here????

pick from what's been shown, no more revisions until you all can agree on ONE thing for me to go towards. for class I'm submitting the messy one without the teeth.

Star, I"m not changing the middle much, so if that drives you away, sorry, the abstract skull/death works for me, I'm not beating you over the head with OOOO look at the skull it's so mean, I must be so tough cause I'm wearing it . . . blah blah BS. I really didn't want to explain that either.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by babyhog on 10/06/11 at 10:48:45

I think the motorcycle is too distorted in the messy one.  Blends in, almost un-noticeable.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by Boule’tard on 10/06/11 at 10:58:10

No good art was ever created by committee..

But I think the general consensus is:

-Clean is better than the paintball splotches
-Cleaned up silhouette better than the detailed one
-Later revised skull better than the one w/diamond nose
-Sunburst better than rainbow

I like the later one with the feathery bird.  The only thing that rubs me wrong on that one is the curves of "Ride" conflict with some of the bike lines.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by LostArtist on 10/06/11 at 11:10:39

okay, here it is:

Bike is bigger!  splatters smaller.

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a9/mxr199/tshirt/tshirt-Expressive3.jpg

I like how the Ride is, the R is on the seat and the upstoke of the d is the frame to the tripple tree and the e goes into the wheel, happy accident!!  I like this, I would wear this, I have to wear this for class actually but I like this!   8-)

if you all like this, send me a photo of a savage profile, or I can get one online I guess and I'll make one like this with a savage. so how do we vote on here so I know if you all want that????

and again, thank you all!!

no one here has been rude or anything about saying they dont' like this design, it's okay to not like this, but I'm not going to bend over backwards to please one or two people while making myself unhappy. I understand that I'm facing an uphill struggle with the skull design, how dare I make a skull that's not scarey . . . blasphemous! whatever.  that's the difference between respect and fear, I don't fear death, I respect it. and I accept it.  the respect was never about the bike although all riders and rides should be respected as people at the very least. so the word respect may make it's way back into this design I just couldn't get it to work with this one, no time to really play with the word placement/font/etc. . ..

some of you all have helped me create something I really like and I thank you for that.

so, now I'm very undecided about ever showing this site anything creative from me again, no one here seems to enjoy it so why waste the effort, on the other side, some of you really did help improve my design and I'm much happier about this now than I was when it began. And this doesn't have to be the only version of this design, I can replace the wings with other things, maybe some kind of tribal pattern, or just beveled lines or or or . . .  so maybe this is just a starting point

whoooo whoooo

:P

Oh please don't let the downers stop you from sharing.  It is hard to put yourself out like that, but like you said, you can never please everyone!  Just remember that going into it, and walk away with the constructive stuff.  Considering the negative has to help too though, otherwise we would always assume what we like is best.  Everyone has a different perspective.  We learn from all of them, good or bad.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by built2last66 on 10/07/11 at 08:21:29

I like the new ones, the clean sunburst one or without the sunburst with "Ride" is good... with the more evil skull.. even some devilish eyes...

You asked for opinions, and you got them. Don't stop, keep working on it.. let's get some "Ride" shirts/patches/back patches printed up :D

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by verslagen1 on 10/07/11 at 09:04:05

constructive critism is good, but hardly anyone knows how to give it.
so you end up with negative BS.  I watched some chef challenge the other day... now there was a master of the back handed compliment.

You're going to get this all your life.  Learn to filter the BS and hear the good stuff.

The skull and wings gives the the impression of an owl.  Probably cause its all round, even though you have a scallop at the bottom.  When you added the teeth, I got that it was a skull.  No, a skull doesn't have to be scarry, but some design features must be present or it looks like something else.

Keep up the good work, as Dr. George always said "to increase you rate of success, increase your rate of failure".  Don't take failure as a bad thing, doing nothing is.

Title: Re: Opinions needed
Post by RidgeRunner13 on 10/07/11 at 09:07:01

I do things to please myself. If it also pleases others, great! If not, oh, well. I have to doubt their taste! ::)

You may have noticed we have some members who like to fling poo at just about everything! Don't let their reactions shape your work or you'll end up with something you don't like. And your the one that has to live with it & say I did that. ;)

Ride to live & live to ride, but ride wharever you like, & don't apoligize for it. If your on 2 wheels, that's all that matters! ;D

I'll put my soapbox away for now.......... don't make me have to get it out again!!! 8-)

As an art student, an exhibitor, and an art teacher, I have learned how to take and how to give criticism.
A student can show me pure crap and I always find something positive to say about it, and offer suggestions for improvement. When I mark student work I always use a rubric that includes a large (usually 30%) portion for effort. That way a student who has little or no talent can pass if they work hard, and a gifted student that just coasts does not get a really high mark.
I also tell them it's their art project and if they don't follow my advice that's ok too.
The key to handling negative criticism is to be able to justify your artistic decisions to whomever is doing the criticism, and  to take their remarks with a grain of salt.
If you ask for critical advice be prepared to take the good with the bad, know who to listen to and who not to, and thank everyone anyway. ;)

I think I did pretty good with that in this case. yeah I gave some snark back, but I got some snark too, all is fair, all is good :)

on the patch, looked into a bit, not really very much though yet, seems like usually they are kind of expensive, like a buy in bulk is better idea kinda thing. I'll look into it more later but right now, the costs seem prohibitive. :(
