Title: Does anyone know how to move a Grandfather clock?
Post by prechermike on 10/03/11 at 17:59:18

This is a serious question.  I know there are some folks on here who seem to know a little about everything.

My wife's grandmother is breaking up housekeeping, after the death of her husband and we are inheriting the Grandfather clock. We have to move it about 180 miles, three hours or so.  I know those things are delicate, pendulums and weights inside need to be removed and/or secured.  I have a pickup truck.  Any help, suggestions and so forth would be appreciated.

I just did a google search and the first answer was REALLY REALLY in depth:

http://www.clocksofyore.com/test/how-to-properly-move-your-grandfather-clock

Try googling "How to move a grandfather clock safely"

Thanks guys.  I am not afraid to jump in and do things, but I like to try and figure ou what I am doing first.  And this clock is special and I would hate to not do it right (read, mess it up!).  Not sure when I am going to go get it.  It is a surprise for my wife, she does not know we are getting it. (Kind of a long story.)

You can hide it at my house if you need to!  ;)

Thanks for the offer,  but the cat kind of jumped out of the bag.  When she found out the clock had been spoken for, she was not happy.  She didn't know we had spoken for it!  That does kind of take some of the pressure off in the getting it department, now she can help move it!

Personally, I'd bite the bullet and hire professional movers who are well insured.  Pickup beds are OK for things that aren't particularly valuable or to which there is no emotional attachment, but not for fragile, large things like this clock or a piano, for instance.

Let a pro do it.

;D ;D ;D

I agree with Jerry, this is a job for the pros.

Preacher Mike, I would like to suggest you check with
a place that sells those kind of clocks, if one is near
you. They will have the information your seeking.
They also may be able to move it for you for hopefully
a small fee, or even suggest someone that knows how
to do it. I would not attempt it myself, their too fragile.
Also with the history behind it, I can understand your
concern. All the best on moving it. :) kim

OK, so now I know how to move a Grandfather clock.  However, I would not suggest doing it exactly the way I did it.   :-?

I started on Thursday by driving 15 hours to Mississippi to conduct a funeral.  Friday, after the funeral, I flew from Jackson to Richmond VA, arriving about midnight.  Saturday (after still more changes of plans), my wife was ready to hold off on the clock.  I wanted to at least see if it would fit in the vehicle.  From there, things got much, much better.    :)

My advice would be to go very slow, look things over, think before you act.  We removed the weights and pendulm, put the clock in the back of the Expedition, wrapping it very carefully and then wrapped it some more.  It was a long drive back home, stopping for supper and stuff on the way, but we finally made it home.

Then we carefully moved the clock in the house, put in the weights, pendulm, set it and then just listened to it chime.   :D

My wife's Nannie bought the clock for Grandaddy back in 1977, my wife has always loved the clock.  I am glad that we now have it in our home.

Sorry about the picture, it is my daughter's cell phone.

Happy wife = happy life!

I have to ask,did the clock stop when your Grandpa died ?
No kidding that usually happens, it's because grandpa usually wound the clock,he dies after some illness, he dies, the clock stops.

Great to see you again, Mick!

Actually, the clock didn't stop when Grandaddy died, my wife's uncle kep the clock going.  However, when he died, the clock finally stopped.  The clock has been stopped for almost 5 years, i am glad to say it is ticking and chiming again.
