Title: bike won't start?
Post by sillydilly on 09/30/11 at 11:53:08

had a bit of en electrical failure yesterday with my bike.

I went to go start it as usual, and this time as soon as the starter motor engaged it acted as if it blew a fuse and won't turn over anymore.

My neutral light is no longer on, every other light works. When I try to start it, the decompressor activates but nothing from the starter. I manually jumped the starter with booster cables and it fired right up.

Must be a short between the electrical and that starter somewhere? starter relay???

anyone experience this?

Had your seat or tank off lately?

Look for shorted/pinched wires, replace fuse with tank and seat off and look for the smoke/spark when you try to start it.

Kindly put the gas tank pretty far away and cap off that gas line, please

What did it act like... exactly?

2 possibles... 1. cut neutral wire. 2. decomp needs adjustment.

it seemed like the wrong stroke at the wrong time, kinda like the piston kicked back slightly and jerked the starter then the whole thing felt like it was dead.

when I was charging the battery, the neutral light flickered on and off. wondering if theres a way to make an "always neutral" incase its the one grieving me?

What year?

I'd check the adjustment on the decomp.

quick comformation, put the bike in 4th, bump the bike forward to get off the compression stroke.  back to neutral (or pull in the clutch and put up the kickstand) and try and start.  If it starts, it's your decomp.

Don't bump your bike backward, especially if you have a 4 speed.  I'll be a quick trip to the junk yard if you do.

Ive started the bike and rode it, after jumping the starter motor with booster cables. I dont think it'd the decomp. Ive removed the starter adn tried to spin it out of the engine using the bikes electrical system but it wont fire.

its the 1986 bobber, showed in "bobber finally finished" thread on page 1 of this forum
