Yes, there are laws.  The sphincter cager in the video would be ticketed and have to pay for any damage.  In most places in CA you can split lanes if you do it safely.  Other states allow it too, but I don't know which.  Most of the rest of the world is okay with lane splitting as well.

From the CHP website:
---- Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles?               Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner.

I lived next to a CHP bike cop in Sunnyvale for a while.  He seemed to think 10mph was about as fast as he would permit for lane splitters.

He also told me once that the safest speed for riding a motorcycle in normal traffic was about 2mph faster than the average speed of the traffic.
-- You are making all the decisions as to lanes, positions, etc., not reacting.
-- You are moving relative to the traffic so they have a better chance of seeing you.
-- Usually the cops will not bother you if you are flowing calmly with the prevailing traffic.

Lane splitting is leagal here too.

If that cager intentionally popped his door open, he would be at fault in NC.
Proving it is another story tho.... :P

Look at the plates, it's not even in the U.S.A., let alone Cali.

I foresee something bad in that cage drivers' future. 8-)

Of course it was deliberate. Why else would he have opened his door?  I would have trashed his car and  beat him into a bloody pulp with my helmet! They guy in the car got mad because the bike was moving and he was not.

The driver of the Audi SUV that the bike got knocked into should have come out and kicked some taxi driver ass too.

How many drivers (ones that DO NOT also ride a motorcycle) know whether lane splitting is legal or illegal?  I'd say most don't know one way or the other, but most probably assume its illegal.

Legal or not, it all depends on what you're exposed to.
The worst ones I come across are out of staters.  They are the ones most out of sinc with the others and unaware of m/c's in general.

I try not to do it, seems dangerous.  I have only ever skipped a few cars at a time to catch up with my group of riders.

Unintentional.
Cab trunk already popped before they came in to frame.
Cabbie was getting out to assist unloading or loading of luggage.

Why on EARTH would a cabbie be mad for sitting in traffic with the meter running (assuming he had paying passengers)?

Otherwise, I'da beat the crappity smack outta that crappity smacker...  :D

I have to gather from the other posts what
the pic shows. The pic did not show on my
screen for some reason.
As far as lane splitting, it is illegal here. I do
see where it could be handy and the bad
effects of it also. Illegal or not, if I am in
a situation where I am going to be hit, guess
what I am going to do? :) kim
