In most places in CA you can split lanes if you do it safely. Other states allow it too, but I don't know which. Most of the rest of the world is okay with lane splitting as well. From the CHP website: ---- Can motorcycle riders "split" lanes and ride between other vehicles? Lane splitting by motorcycles is permissible but must be done in a safe and prudent manner. I lived next to a CHP bike cop in Sunnyvale for a while. He seemed to think 10mph was about as fast as he would permit for lane splitters. He also told me once that the safest speed for riding a motorcycle in normal traffic was about 2mph faster than the average speed of the traffic. -- You are making all the decisions as to lanes, positions, etc., not reacting. -- You are moving relative to the traffic so they have a better chance of seeing you. -- Usually the cops will not bother you if you are flowing calmly with the prevailing traffic. |

As far as lane splitting, it is illegal here. I do see where it could be handy and the bad effects of it also.
