Title: Engine rescue and Bobber build
Post by Jockesavage on 09/23/11 at 01:31:50

First of all. Hi from Sweden! Great forum. :)

Bought a 94 Savage last year that I hope will run smothly next spring.

The engine ran, but sounded wired so I started to pick it apart. Found the camchain tensioner hanging loose. The spring inside was broken of. :( Pics of damages will come.

What kind of damage can I expect in the rest of the engine if that camcain been loose?

Sorry for bad spelling.

I'd take a magnet on a telescoping rod and run it through the little holes in the bottom of the crankcase just to see if there are pieces and parts that stick to it. If not I think she'll live but Id' make sure you change over to a verslavy mod.

check the cam timing.  hopefully it didn't get out of time as the piston will smack the valves.

"verslavy mod"?

I'll go shopping for a magnet.

and then I'll try to check set the timing with the help of Clymer.

Here's some pictures

Verslavy...developed by the one and only Verslagen.

So, my plan is:

To place a raptor petcock on the sportster tank.
Question: How important is it for the petcock to be level horisontaly?

Place the back fender on the swingarm as close to the wheel as I can
Question: How much travle dose the suspention have upwards?

Putting a conefilter on
Question: What is needed to do too the engine after that?

Fit a harley muffler
Question: Do i need to do anything to the engine efter that?

Sorry for all the questions att once.
But maybe after the build is done the thread can be made over in to a DIY-bobber thread. :)

If you mount the fender to the swingarm, travel doesnt matter.

Well i want to mount the seat as low and far back as possible. So I will chop of the original fender mounts(you know the horns sticking up in the back) ;)

But I dont want the fender hitting the underside of the under side seat when going over bumps.

Well,, thats a consideration, allrite.. I dont thgink Ive ever bottomed the shocks out, speed over bumps plays a role, so, you can cut it closer than Max Travel .

I worried the same issue with my build. I added a 1/2 inch more clearance by switching out my stock shocks for a pair of 11" Progressives. They look great and just needed a small amount of modifying.

It is not very important about the petcock being level, as long as it is not grossly tilted.  You may lose a little range on reserve, though.

If you change the air filter, you may have to rejet.  I wouldn't worry about that, though, unless you notice some actual performance problems.  You have a 50:50 chance of everything working fine as it is.

A Harley muffler may require richer jetting too, especially when combined with less intake restriction.  Again, don't worry about it till you assemble it all and see how it works.  If you do have any issues, mixture-wise, there are about 10,000 threads here dealing with jetting for various engine mods.
