Title: Why doesn't this happen on beautiful days?
Post by greenmonster on 09/22/11 at 09:33:40

Symptoms:

Pouring rain.
Parking lot-like traffic.
Sputter, catch, die.

So there's the symptoms, I was driving to work in the rain (heavy) when I got on to the freeway it was a parking lot, stop and go is optimistic at best. I was on there for five to ten minutes before the bike did the above. I pulled over, cranked her a few times and she'd catch then die, then she just turned but wouldn't catch. I could smell gas so I let off for about five minutes and tried again. She started up, I gave her a rev and she died. I started her again and keeping the RPM up I took an over pass that allowed me to hit a couple lights instead of heading through a tunnel, the traffic was lighter so I made some okay headway. Got back onto an on ramp and started sitting in the same traffic, after a couple minutes, still keeping the RPM up, she seemed to miss once so I reved her up again, 10-15 seconds later she missed again, reved her up again, but this time it was too late and she died again. I pulled over and called a friend to come pick me and Nessy up. When he got there, she started no problem and I drove her up the ramp.

Any one have any suggestions?

Yep, water is a b1tch, I notice when driving in rain it gets caught around the spark plug hole.

Would that cause these symptoms? I just don't get why it stalls out then runs fine for a while later?

You mean now it runs fine again without you doing anything to it? Something went through the carb, is the air filter clean? I have plenty of water by the regulator but nothing that shut of the bike like that. If it's not electrical it's fuel or air mixture.

It stalls out, I let it sit for a while (5-10 minutes) and it runs again.

I would check the obvious, air filter, spark plug, empty the carb, put some   carb cleaner of your choice, etc....

I don't see it being the carb. It runs fine while it's running, it's just that it stalls out and won't start again for a bit. It's almost like it's flooding itself. I'm off to check the airfilter though.

Check the connectors under the tank,, if they are coming loose,,

Think a loose connection would cause that? Or are we shooting in the dark now?

Even if we are, I'm still going to check. Just wondering how optimistic I should be.

Had something similar with a bad coil on another bike - fine while coil was cold, misfires then no ignition as it got hotter. Bad connection could show similar symptoms

Well, I took off the tank, the connections all looked good, but I blew them out with some air and taped them up. Here's hoping that I make it home...

Check the tank vent in the gas cap.

I kinda agree with Arnold. It could be you got water in the fuel, which would do the above stuff. You can always empty the bowl on the carb into a glass and see if it separates. Check battery connections, and make sure the spark plug area isn't getting wet and the rectifier is doing ok.

Most likely fuel related though!

well, she got me home and back to work. New symptom too, she doesn't seem to like idling any more.

So I'm replacing the plug. Anyone have the torque spec for the spark plug handy?

Suzuki says "1/2 turn past snug or finger tight," for a new plug and 1/4 turn for a used plug.
The service manual says squat. ;D

Do you squat with the bike on the sidestand, or does the bike have to be vertical?
