Title: My project proceeds...
Post by Smokestack on 09/18/11 at 18:23:11

Done some more stuff to the ol' girl.  Figured I'd share, cuz thats what my pappy taught me.  Thoughts, feelings and insults welcome...

Anyway... so far, so good.  Soon (as in, over the winter) I'll do some more routine stuff, like the fix the speedo rattle and the plug/cap leak, get some different mirrors and possibly smooth out the control layout.  I'm toying with moving the rear turn signals onto the back fender; right above the struts.  I'm still trying to figure out how I'm gonna run the wires under the fender, though...

Also gonna rip into the engine and begin the process of turning this little thing into a fire-breathing monster.  Should be fun...

Overall shot.

Made a rubber shroud for the battery terminals, installed a set of Routy's forward controls.  Next is the shroud for the electrical box.

Emergency medical for my bike; A.K.A: the toolbag.

$50 Superbrace scored from an old biker in town that was parting out his "ex-old lady"s ride.

Smoothed out the fender strut welds (bad shot; I'll get another).  Painted flat black from metallic grey.

Heh. Yeah, that'll definitely be included in the whole engine rebuild / tune-up / fire-breathing monster thing.  To the best of my knowledge (which is limited at best when it comes to exhaust flow and scavenging, etc...), I kinda have to get something free-flowing to make it all work, I just haven't decided what I'm gonna slap on there just yet...

That looks darn cool. Right on.

I really like that vertical tool-bag. I think I'll have to take that idea and run with it. My current traditional style tool-bag is too big. I had it on the forks and it sagged down and scratched and dented my fender when the forks would compress. I moved it above the rear tail-light attached to the rear seat backrest. I don't like that location. Your spot is perfect unused real estate.

IMO, the Best exhaust is the Supertrapp,, it isnt the prettiest, I think the best looking is the Dyna & I ( I dont know this, I suspect it, & for absolutely NO reason other than I like the looks of it & I know its Freer flowing then the stock one) think the Dyna is about as good as the Supertrapp, unless you are really good at tuning & are willing to work the TRapp down to the last %age point of a horsepower. For the average mechanic, someone who deals in the rule of 80/20,,like me, the Dyna is gonna satisfy their needs, There ARE guys here who have the talent & ability & desire to drag Every Last Drop of performance out of these things that is possible w/o spending Huge $$$.. So, having said all that,, I Wish I had gone with the Dyna, instead of the TRapp.,. I woulda saved a ton O $$ & had about the same performance.
A fork brace is a necessity on these things if youre gonna use the power you are trying to make.

The back fender is the front fender from and old Magna.  I got 2 of 'em for 30 bux at a local salvage yard.  Cut 'em to size and welded on some struts made from steel rod, then drilled and tapped some 1/4-20 holes into the swing arm at the bottom.  Turned out pretty well...

I'm not a big fan of the stickers either, but otherwise, nice bike. I like those rear blinkers. Are those the 10" mini apes?

It's gorgeous as usual Smokestack.

I am real close to dropping some cash on those Friscos and some extended cables.  I just have to convince my wife there is something she needs to drop $250 on so I am clear to spend.

Take a weekend trip, show her a good time,, you get to have fun AND clear the decks for some bike goodies.. you will need to wait an appropriate length of time not mentioning what you want..

Haha very good.  Sounds like you are speaking from experience, lol.

Gotta agree with two of the other posters - the bike looks great but the stickers detract from all the hard work you put into it.  They are the first thing that catches your eye.  I'd much rather the first thing I notice be that cool fender or seat.  Regardless, as they said, it's your choice and you did some great stuff there.  Looking forward to what muffler you end up choosing to go with that bike style.

Post by Bubba on 09/21/11 at 14:47:11

did you chop the horns off for the seat?

Title: Re: My project proceeds...
Post by Smokestack on 09/22/11 at 05:41:59

MrBrownTX; Frisco's are about 7" rise, not too huge, so you might be able to get away with stock S40 cables.

Bubba;  Yup, the seat horns were cut down.  I cut them lower and on an angle, then welded a plate to serve as a new seat mount onto what was left of the horns.  All by eye; I just wanted to minimize the space between the seat and the frame.

As far as the stickers go, I do kinda dig 'em; they help me find my bike quick.  I'm also kinda a jerk, so I love the reaction that the Savage logo gets from some folks!  ;D  All that aside, I'd keep 'em because of this:  I was at a patio having lunch one day over summer, and a couple of guys stopped and were looking at the bike.  I guess they didn't peg me as the rider, but I could hear what they were saying as I was sitting just on the other side of the railing, as close to the bike as I could be.

Dude 1: "I wonder what kind of air filter that is..."
Dude 2: "K&N."
Dude 1, after craning his neck around to look at the end cap logo: "How'd you know that?"
Dude 2: "Look at the tank, man."
Dude 1: "Huh.  So I'm gonna guess that that little battery is from Odyssey, then."
Dude 2: "Ya think?  I'll bet you a million dollars he got the parts from the Steel City Motor Company or Licks Cycles too."

And off they went.  No joke.  Outside of getting parts from Licks (I got the NovDot helmet from a friend for 30 bux, but thats it) it's all on the tank.  I got a laugh out of that....

Another winter gone, another bunch of stuff done.  Lancer's carb kit is on.  It took a bit to tune up, but now she's running like a top.  Thanks Lancer!  New intake done up too.

Chain conversion done.  Looking forward to  messing around with gear ratio's...

New tool bag is a $2 fanny pack from a thrift store; fits nice and snug in between the arms of Routy's forwards.

Stripped the paint off the tank to see how it looks.  Prolly gonna run a bare steel Sporty tank with a fuel sight line in it and hammer on the clear coat.  Yeah, yeah; its cliche, its been done before, blah, blah, blah...

New pipe, too.

On to the Pics....

Very nice indeed  8-) What exhaust did you go with? Straight drag pipe or Raask or other? :-?

New pipe looks awesome, as does the chain conversion on there! Very sweet!

I asked about the fender before... he said he grabbed it from a wrecker for cheap. It does look pretty good on there though. :)

Also - those front signals look GREAT on your bike... I've got a set, except they are black instead of chrome, and when I put them up to it, I just don't get the feeling that they look good...

Title: Re: My project proceeds...
Post by Smokestack on 06/11/12 at 15:24:45

Yeah, the fender is chopped out of and old Handa Magna front fender.  I got two for 30 bucks at a local wrecker, cut it to size, drilled and tapped the swingarm, and welded on some struts.

For those looking, I say go check the front fenders on bikes at your local scrapyard.  A lot of the older ones are pretty cool, with that little duck bill on the ends, and can be had for cheap.  If you can find two or more that you like, grab all of 'em and experiment.  I welded my struts on, but bolt-ons would be real easy to do as well.  Just grab the fender, mock it up at the height you like, grab a drill and go to town.

SimonTuffGuy; if you're able and/or cash laden, think about getting some of the other front end bits black anodized/powdercoated. Black bullet signals would look killer with black trees, lowers and headlight bucket!

Soon.  I'm still shopping it around, looking for the best fit / most reliable.  Once I've settled, I'll shoot ya some specs for a battery box.  The odyssey was good, but I only had it for a year or so before it died.  It's under warranty, but I'm not convinced that it's worth it.  Anyone got any suggestions?

I built a set up for a yuasa AGM that's been going 10 months now, no issues. I dont have any significant time on mine yet.

Got a few questions. Where did you get that tin can and what diameter is it? What kind of seat is that? and what kind of exhaust? Also, based on your judgement by looking at your 8" bars, do you think 10" bars would allow for stock cables?

Thanks!
