Title: Air pressure
Post by rl153 on 09/16/11 at 13:29:52

The air pessure in my front tire dropped about 4 lbs in 2 weeks . The back tire only dropped 1 lb. Do you think this is unusual? Thanks

Yes, its not normal for tube tires to drop 2 lbs a week. I would consider that to be a slow leak.

I would consider that Routy is correct.

I would like to ask, however,... if it is not normal for TUBE tires to drop 2 lbs a week, for what kinds of tires would that slow leak be normal?

Last winter in 5 months I only lost 4 pounds,I would spray wd 40 on the valve then air it up.

Maybe you should try Atkins.

Spit on a finger & drag it across the valve stem, otta be able to create a Bubble. If it gets bigger,, its leaking

Tires are rubber. Rubber is pourus. (porous?) *spellcheck* //  They all eventually leak some, especially with temp change. Usually colder weather causes them to read less pressure. I assume this also has to do with heat expands//cold contracts. If you check them regularly, you should notice a pattern, over time.
That said, having worked in the tire business for 23 years, it was a common thing to be airing up tires as soon as the cold weather moved in. But even in summer, almost every car on the rack had low tire pressure. That's one reason why we had to check every tire on every car.
I would air them up and then check them every day for the next week. If it goes back down in that time, then you probably have a leak.

Check w/spit, fix w/ wd40

since you just need some moisture to carry whatever bit of sh!tsky out of the seal, hock a big one.  forget the wd40.

Deflate the tire, take the core out of the valve, and stick the WD40 red straw in the valve stem and squirt.  The idea is to dislodge any small chunks sitting there that might cause a leak.  Clean off the core as well before you insert it back into the stem.  Use a metal valve cap with a rubber seal inside as insurance.

Some guys don't like to squirt oily stuff into the valve stem (thereby squirting oily stuff into the tube), so they just use compressed air.

Just deflate tire about 10 pounds spray with WD 40 and air it back up.The needle can get sticky some times.

Or just replace the core. Any tire place has them, or auto parts places. For mere pennies !! And if it still leaks out the valve then, you need a new tube.

Good idea, and cheap.  Also use a metal valve cap with a good seal inside.

Perhaps worded wrong,....2 lbs a week is perfectly normal for any type of tire that has a slow leak ::) Is that better?

I have about a 1lb per week leek in my ATV (tubless) trailer tire, and I can't find it. I've had the entire thing covered w/ soap, and nothing ! So using case law, 1 lb per week is normal,.....for that tire anyway.
I also was in a tire shop for a couple years before tubeless, and I can remember tube type car tires (tubes) having slow leaks that could not be found,.....leaked under pressure only, so we just replaced the tube.
