Title: Wrecked Motorcycle up in Flames
Post by Routy on 09/15/11 at 18:13:02

Just on the 5pm news....ABC
Car crashed into a motorcycle,....cycle is under the front bumper, and burst into flames,.....the rider is completely under the car !
He will burn in short order as the car is starting to burn too.
8 guys run to the rescue, pick up one side of the car, another guy drags the rider out from under the car to saftey,....a minute later the car is history,....along w/ the bike.
3 guesses what I was thinking afterward,.......
Was he riding a bike w/o a vac operated PC ??
And, did it nearly cost him his life ??? :o

No, what nearly costed him his life was the moron in the car that pulled out of that lot without looking.

Kudos to those people for being there and being brave enough to help.

I saw the footage on tonights news. That was insane, he is lucky to be alive. Kudos to all those who lifted that car.

The driver almost killed a man...

Manual PC's have been reliably used for decades prior to the current vacuum operated versions.  As for the fire in the accident video, one can only speculate as to the cause at this point.  The gas tank could have been punctured, the gas line could have been severed, gas could have leaked out of the gas cap, or maybe the vacuum PC was set on Prime?   ;)   One thing is for certain, the people that came to his rescue are true heroes!

now... now... no manual petcock paranoia allowed.   :o

Don't worry Routy,... that'll never happen to you...
Your vac petcock will protect you...

Just make sure that you crash to the left, so it has a chance to work...
;D ;D ;D...

None of us will ever know if the vac PC ever prevented a fire,.....my point has only been that it for sure could, and IMO, very likely has.

And right, didn't mean to set off PC paranoia,......we wouldn't want to see a pile of scrapped Raptors !! :o ;D

This is my newbie opinion... judging from the style of the bike I saw, it looked like an older restored cruiser kind of bike, so it probably had a fuel hose that got knocked off in the dump and sparks from the skid (metal on the street) set it ablaze...

It was a Honda CX500 that was turned into a cafe racer

Thanks, I couldn't really tell.

Yep, those construction workers did an awesome job there.

The CX500 came with a vac petcock.  Fat lot of good it did in this case.

So is the vac petcock supposed to vacuum the fuel somewhere else in case of a wreck to keep gas from spewing everywhere and igniting BMWs?

I knew a guy who knew a guy that was trapped in a burning car by a seatbelt.

Kinda shows how dangerous seatbelts are, eh?

If the BMW driver would have been wearing his seat belt then the motorcycle wouldn't have caught on fire.

Also, if the motorcycle had a quieter muffler then the BMW wouldn't have swerved across the middle turn lane and into the oncoming lane.

In other words, the BMW driver should have been wearing a helmet.

Yeah, but what if the motorcycle rider would have been wearing HIS seatbelt??!!

Believe it or not, a bill actually made it to the floor of the Indiana (I think) legislature years ago that would have a required seatbelts on motorcycles.

If the driver of the BMW would have been wearing gloves..

Biggest problem is all the cagers who wear their backsides as hats...

One news commentator said the rider was not wearing a helmet but he was going to buy the best one he could find when he started riding again.

Yeah, those commentators always know the facts, eh?

Like the one that said helmets were dangerous when worn backwards.

Or the one that reported a gyrocopter crashed because the rotor lost power.  (gyro rotors are not powered)

Or the one that said "had he not been armed, he wouldn't have shot himself.."

Or the one that complained, "fully half of the children in this district are below average.."

You can't make this stuff up

Routy, so far we have never had a Raptor equipped bike go up in flames.

(Heck, so far we have never had a vac petcock equipped bike go up in flames either)

So far we have not had a Raptor fuel in sump incident either.

We have had 6-7 vac petcock fuel in sump incidents so far (depending on who's counting, but Serrobot can tell you all about his fuel in airbox on ground and in sump episodes if you ask him nice)

We have had two reported incidences of people tearing up an engine at the same time their vac petcocks were mysteriously acting up.  (fact)

And we have one known incident of someone getting into a wreck while frantically fiddling with a vac petcock trying desperately to get some gas into his carburetor to get his scoot going again. (fact)

And we have had actually one incident where both things were happening at about the same time. (fact, but let's not get into double dipping the numbers any, because they really don't need it)

;D   ;D   ;D

SO, PLEASE DO please tell me again about bike safety again and how we should all be safe and encourage each other to be safe.

Based on the numbers above, I would think we would all be interested in removing any known dangerous components that we can reliably identify and numerically quantify as being potentially dangerous.

;D   ;D   ;D

:-/     Oh, but that's just me being PP all over again -- or "rabid slavering Ford F250 coming up behind me" phobic as the case may be.

Shoot, I'll be all afraid of big trucks all next week, even them nice calm Chevys and sedate Dodges.

:D   ....  but I won't be afeared of my deadly viper "vacsucker" petcock any at all, mainly 'cause I ain't got me one no more !!!
