Title: Running rough.
Post by arteacher on 09/14/11 at 15:18:20

On Saturday I took the bike for a run to the lake and it ran perfect. On Tuesday I took the seat off to install a tank bib. Today I took it out to run some errands. It ran prefect to the first store, including a short run at 60 mph. On the way to the next store It was bogging down under moderate acceleration, and almost stalling at hard acceleration. I brought it home and it seemed fine with no load on the motor and idle was fine all day. No unusual noises from the engine.
I put it on prime and took it for another little spin. Same problem. On gentle acceleration it doesn't bog, but  it won't run faster than 4500 rpm in 5th gear.
What I've modded: Raask exhaust, 2/3 white spacer mod, 55 pilot and 150 main jets, Dial-a-Jet.
Where should I start looking?

I'd start by checking the gas cap vent... (Try draining the tank while set to prime.  Leave the gas cap on.  See if you get a smooth, steady flow...
It wouldn't hurt to then pour that gas into your car and replace the gas with fresh...

Then,.. clean air filter, new spark plug,... then let us know...

(PS... don't know dialajet,... but can you bypass it?... Your jetting seems pretty good without it),... (maybe a little rich on the pilot, but that's not the problem)...

[edit]Today at 2:50pm
EDIT... Oh, and check for bug legs in your main jet... ;)...[/edit]

3...2....1.....Petcock Failure.....Serow we have a problem!!!!!

OK- I took the plug out and it's fine (a little bone white ash)-replaced it anyway.
   - drained the tank. There is lots of flow on prime with the gas cap on.
   - the vacuum line holds a vacuum.
   -air filter is good.
What next?????

SEAFOAM?!?!?! ;D (just instigating)

Added the mystical Seafoam yet?

Rap on the float bowl 3-4 times sharply with a large screw driver handle yet to resettle your float yet?

If these two have been done/don't fix it, you are likely doing a carb bowl teardown next, looking for signs of trash & whatever.    You could empty your float bowl screw into a white ceramic bowl looking for trash, etc. as a before step if you wanted to take that extra step (no matter what you see or don't see next step is to take the bowl off anyway).

Your dial-a-jet needs someone who owns one to explain how to trouble shoot it -- for the rest of us it is just another "unknown potential cause".

=======================

Do you run a large fine micron level paper pleated fuel filter as part of your rig?  If so, no matter what happens you might consider putting one in place as what we are going after next is small gas borne trash that has blocked something up.

I am almost positive the DAJ has nothing to do with it. The only thing that can go wrong with them is if they get plugged up, and I have a breather filter on it, and if it did quit working the bike would run a little lean is all.

-pulled the float bowl and this is what I found:

http://p1.bikepics.com/2011%5C09%5C15%5Cbikepics-2272604-800.jpg
How the heck would it get in there?
Also notice the black granules- fuel filter coming soon.
It is missing a couple of legs. Should I take the carb apart looking for spider parts?  or put it all back together and hope for the best.
Does Seafoam dissolve spider legs? ;D

Crawled down the vent tube from up under the gas tank.

Rare, but not unheard of.

Small filters can be bought at auto parts store to put on the ends of these little tubes that will keep the bugs out.

Well,... while you've got the bowl off,... it wouldn't hurt to pull the jets and look at them... run a thin wire through them, spray some cleaner in 'em... also squirt some up the passages, etc...

Somethin' must be blocked up somewhere... clean everything you can reach from there...

... then,... bury that spider...
;)...

My vent tubes exit at the mouth of the air box.
I was thinking I would stuff a bit of copper mesh in the tubes.

... bet you've got a bug leg in your main jet...

Sure wish I'd suggested that in my first post...
I'd be infamous!... :-?...

Hmmm?,... Wait a minute... I think I did... ;D...

Where's that dern Routy when you need him??  By jove, it was an "intermittent blockage caused by a floating piece if debris!"  ;D

Congrats on finding the BUGaboo, huh huh..

That's why you can't ever say, "Now I've seen it all."  ;)

spiders are not bugs.   ;D

Arachnoiditis of the carburetor!  ;D  What amazes me is that the gas fumes didn't deter it from continuing it's trek down the vent tube.  :-?

Why not try some Marvel Mystery Oil?  (acronym: MMO)

or even some Super Heavy-duty Insect Treatment?  (acronym not allowed)

                                                                                               ;)

Where is all the bad stuff that settles in the bowl from gasahol ?
and all the varnish that comes from todays fuel lousy fuel that messes everything up,......you know, all the stuff that you need to put seafoam in to get rid of,......all the stuff that really does not happen anymore w/ todays fuels !
Spiders ? Yep, that beats all.
From just that one statement, seems like a spider leg got into the "fuel enrichment system".......which I know nothing about on this carb.
But, by all means, add a fuel filter,.....not that that would have prevented this.
PS,....I did forget that Art was into this carb bowl before, maybe cleaned it. But if like my '07, it was clean before he started.

Routy you get black stuff in your carb from gasohol and the Sea Foam cleans it and it ends up in your fuel bowl like on your boat motor.

"Super Heavy-duty Insect Treatment"
Where do you get this stuff?

From long years of effort finely honing an obtuse sense of humor, tainted by a half-million miles on motorcycles, blowing things up while inverted and supersonic, thousands of hours of flying around in little airplanes with the other "pilot" trying to kill me, 43 years of being married to the wrong woman, the frustration of being only halfway through my quest of expending a trailer-load of 9mm, and a lifetime of combatting the spread of liberalism.

Where do you get YOUR stuff?

;D

p.s. -- did you even notice the acronym?

It's becoming such a joy to come here daily and watch the kids argue over the least little thing. I wonder if the Honda and Yamaha and Harley forums have as much fun as we do here?

Gyrobob, only 1/2 of a trailer full of 9mm?? You got some catching up to do, son. I'm at 3/4 and only 55 years old.

Hey,.. I'm talkin' a semi-truck trailer here!!

Yes I noticed the acronym. My  tongue was in my cheek. It was a joke. ;D
BTW I flew a friends Chipmunk a few times- inverted even. I imagine you did your combat flying in 'Nam?

Chipmunks are cool.  I almost got a ride in one at an airshow, but the weather screwed everything up.

I just missed 'Nam.  My brother was there '67-'71 in Dustoff helos (medevac).  Was shot down 7 times.  That was enough for both of us, he used to explain.

The only stuff I ever blew up were drones, towed targets, range targets (buses, dumpsters, old buildings) etc.

First F-4 job was in Iceland in '74.  If you ever have chance to live there, pass it up.

OK- I cleaned the carb by taking the top off and soaking it with carb cleaner and Seafoam cleaner. Put it all back together. Put fresh gas in it and started it up. Man there was a lot of smoke from the cleaner. Took it out for a spin (drum role please).............
PERFECT! :) :) :)
It's amazing how much better they run sans spider.
Thanks for all your help guys.
And the funeral for the spider is tomorrow. He is already embalmed. ;D

Yeah, except, the black was black paint chips, and it was a black Mercury motor, and the fact is that seafoam did nothing to even begin to break it up.

OH. I was talking a double semi trailer. 1 full one and 1/2 of the second one. That would be 3/4 of the total, right?
