Title: Mine shoots flames, too.

Put a Dyna muffler on from a '96 Wide Glide (stock; used for about 6 months then swapped). Checked for exhaust leaks.

Put in 150/55 jets (pilot has bleed holes).

Did the white spacer at about 2/3. Does the material matter. The only thing I could find were 1mm thick #4 nylon washers. Put two of them in.

Pulled the brass plug and set the mixture. Judging idle speed by ear.

Checked for petcock diaphragm leak. No fuel in the hose and seems to hold against a good draw.

Has good power but it does shoot a blue flame about 8" out the back near the end of decel. Pops revving down, too. Sometime a big poof with flame on shutdown.

What to check next?

Another question, too. My mixture screw turns really easy. Does anyone have problems with it staying in place? What do you do to make it stay put?

Thanks all.

Two #4 nylon spacers?...  You increased instead of decreased...
Take one out,... one should be .066", or 2/3 of stock .1" thickness...
 ;)...

1mm = .04 "

Sorry,... I distracted myself with my mm/inches mix up... :-?...

Your idle mix screw should have a spring under it, to hold pressure on it and a stop it from wiggling out...

Does that muffler have the baffle knocked out of it?... No baffle will likely give you flames....  (put a stick down it from the back end,.. if it goes more than halfway down, the baffle is gone)or... is it really loud?......

I haven't stuck a stick down there yet but the guy I bought them from said they were stock and it is not loud. Sounds really nice.

What effect would putting the original spacer back in and keeping the jet mod have? Does that negate the mod?

I don't currently have a tach and am looking to buy one. Do I have to have an induction pickup or is there a cover I can remove to put on a reflector to use a laser tach?

If you have a smartphone of some kind (iphone, droid, etc.), you can get an app (probably free) for a tachometer that uses sound for a tach signal.  Heli-headspeed is one.  There are several others.

One other interesting app is a vibration meter.  I use it to balance fan blades, gyrocopter rotors, etc.  It also works to dynamically balance motorcycle tires on the motorcycle if you can get them spinning fast enough.
