Title: Bike won't start!!
Post by AZSGT on 08/28/11 at 08:46:46

Ok so I was out riding around town, and when I stopped at a red light I killed the engine so I could talk to this old man about my bike. When I tried to start up on the green light-Nothing!

It started fine up until now. I runs fine, even if I push start it it runs like a top, so I know it is the starter in some way. When I push the start switch, then light dims as though it will start but no turn over at all. It clicks like it wants to but does nothing. I am assuming loose wire or fuse but I can not find where it might be or where else I need to check.

Check your fluid levels in the battery and charge it up.

I thought about that but my head and brake lights work fine, leading me to believe that the battery is good to go. I will check it either way.

Check the ground on the engine, behind the clutch cable,

Check you decomp adjustment.
if it stopped at the compression cycle, and the decomp wasn't tight enough, the starter will stall.

Quick way to check, put it in 5th and bump it forward to get off of the compression stroke.  Then try and start.

Checked ground it is good. I have to believe it is the battery or a loose wire I can't locate, because it had no starting issues early today so I don't think it is the starter itself.

Checked decomp too V1 still the same.

check the starter button with a volt meter
then follow it to the starter.

I don't think it is the button or the starter. When I hit the starter button the lights dim like its gonna start. Meaning it is drawing juice. And it is unusual to lose a starter at 5000 miles. Especially when it worked the minute before.

Gonna have to charge the battery up, just to be certain,

Ok got the battery out and most of the cells are at or below the "low level" line. Is this enough to not start? None are even close to empty but all are low. So do I just need to add distilled water??? and also without a charger, would a push start and a good long ride charge it enough?

You need a battery charger anyway,, everyone needs a battery charger,,  gettin water in the battery is a bit of a challenge,, I have a big syringe,

True a charger is a must have. I got water in the battery, I happen to have a tiny funnel. Battery is back in. Do I HAVE to go get a charger or would a ride do for the time being???

I think its hard on the bikes charge system to use it to charge a battery back up, but its been done a ton of times to no apparent bad result, so, fire that dude up & ride a while,,

tried. Didn't charge. So now I am headed to the shop to test the battery. I am only praying it is not the starter itself. Or the charging system. I am sick of putting $ in this thing.

Id have to pop the tank & check all the connectors, if the battery checks good.

Post by AZSGT on 08/28/11 at 13:40:41

It didn't. Had the battery checked. Only showed 8 Volt and NO cranking amps at all. SOOOOOO battery is gonna have to go. Only question is now how do I know it is the straight battery and not the charging system?

OK I replaced the battery, still won't start. Still clicks, I can hear the relay. Its not the starter button or the switch cause when I press I hear the click and the lights dim. Obviously not the battery. How do I check the starter??

What year model? Has it been kept inside? Starter i most likely fine, You thing the ground is fine, Im not sure, Connectors under tank,, may not be okay, lets start there.

Title: Re: Bike won't start!!
Post by AZSGT on 08/28/11 at 17:45:48

its a 2006 and no its not stored inside. Other than extreme heat we don't get much weather round here

Title: Re: Bike won't start!!
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/28/11 at 18:08:29

First, break the ground loose & clean under there, make sure you have a good ground. Look at the connections on the starter,, heck,, break them loose,, make sure theyre good,, Youve got a little gremlin eatin you alive,, Its not a big deal,, but it a pest,, we will solve it,, just work thru potentil hassle after potential hassle till you get it,,

Lay a hand ON the starter & hit the button, if you feel the starter engage & the engine dont spin,, the decomp is the problem.
OR, the electricals arent passing enough current,, feel the ground cable, if its HOT, youve found resistance,, Hot side, do the same,,

WOW I AM DUMB. I found the issue. A blown relay fuse. lol WOW again. Don't know why the fuse blew, which concerns me but the bike is mobile again. Start at the simple stuff everyone says. Do I listen? NO!

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/28/11 at 18:26:55

Ya it just didn't make sense, all I did was shut down. Oh well, all is well that ends well.

Thanks for hanging in there Justin. It helps just to have someone else to not have any idea what the issue is ;D

Sometimes moral support ain't a bad thing.   Next time you'll tell them to check all the fuses as step #1.

(I will anyway, I pays attention I does)

Jest don't tell them you'll eat crow if you are wrong -- it is a bad mistake to be certain about anything.
That big old ugly black crow bird smells horrible and the feathers are all greasy stinky looking ....

I see him glaring at me every time I open the freezer -- he's a waiting for me

I am workin on an 87, but I am having the exact same problem you did, I was wondering which fuse was blown, and where its at I thought I checked all that I could find but just in case I missed one

Title: Re: Bike won't start!!
Post by AZSGT on 09/10/11 at 16:49:21

Ya mine were under my seat. Mine is bobbed and chopped so I only have 2 fuses. One 20A was blown. Mine I found, was connected to a short in my side stand. As long as I keep my bike in neutral when I turn it on I won't blow it.

Dang, I was afraid ofthat, both of those are fine on mine, thanks for the quick response though
